No.

I actually researched the socket before answering your question. The highest end cpu I could find on ebay was an extreme edition version of your chip that came stock at 3.2 ghz. For $90. About a 14% boost.

Or you could buy a new motherboard and a new dual core cpu that would blow the doors off your current cpu for that price. I'd estimate a dual core athlon X2 at 2.8 is at least three times faster (aka a 200% boost) than your current chip, before you even overclock.

OR! get a fully working 3.2GHz Intel Celeron D for $13. Perfect for my board and yes practically a radiator, but has a nice large ceramic heat spreader making a lurvly space for the heatsink and fan that's going on there. Once overclocked to say 3.5ish it'l be fine for my spec.

an Athlon X2 isn't even remotely close to THREE times faster clock for clock. even a Core 2 is just twice as fast clock for clock. also a 100% boost would be twice as fast so three times faster is not a 300% boost.

that would be slower than what you have plus its only a single core.
 
I was factoring in the fact that it has 2 cores rather than 1. So at least 1.5 times faster clock for clock, AND you have 2 cores, aka three times faster. While a lot of applications don't do multithreaded well, on a modern system you still get a huge boost from the extra core because all the tasks other than the application you are running get offloaded to the second core. Plus even a poorly multithreaded app can usually manage to at least load the second core partially, it's only when you get to 4-8 cores where badly multithreaded apps really become inefficient.

Pentium D and Athlon X2 both have 2 cores, they're both dual core processors.
 
You have all these grand plans for expensive overclock setups involving mineral oil, when you don't need them. You'll get far better performance just buying the year before last's hardware and running it stock, like the AMD chip and motherboard we linked.

Oh right sorry, well I don't have a (working) Pentium D, it was a theoretical thread, seeing if it was worth fixing my old dell mobo for the project.

You also need pumps and radiators, and you need to factor in the cost of you killing your components early. Very very likely that you will fry something using the mineral oil and need to replace it.
 
I love old hardware, but buying old to get better perf. doesnt makeany sense. I only bought a spare 478 board to drop a P4 3.2HT that fell into my lap. I only spent $10 at Free Geek. Any more and I could have got much better. Thats my server now.

You ask for help then refuse the most logical and IMO best responses. When you learn to take advice with consideration and are willing to accept some (warrented) criticism, come back. Its a waste of all of our time if you arent listening.

To be blunt, OCing and or min oil are not a good fit with that setup. $70 can get you sooooo much faster, and it'll be near silent. You are throwing out some really bad ideas.

I was asking for help with the overclock, i got advice done. i introduced a new over clock, and have made my position clear, i want a cheap computer that could cope with day-to-day life, just listening to music and going on the net. simple. To do this, im buying older components for the cheapness, i mean, $10 for a cpu? nb. Its going in oil for the supreme cooling ability (and the novelty). It's not much of a performance upgrade I need, just i need to squeeze some performance out of the old components to cope with modern software demands.

All of your IMO responses are "upgrade", this may be the most logical course of action, but that's not the point. If i wanted to upgrade and simply buy better components, I'd have to sink money into cooling. as in actually have to spend money on it. The pump for the oil I already have, the oil isn't exactly expensive and it's silent, to get that kind of performance out of an air cooled system I'd be spending a little more than $30.

I am listening. "Upgrade" I heard you the first time.

I only wanted to know if it was possible, and any constructive advice you could offer. "Upgrade" is not constructive, its destructive.

Hmm I hadn't thought about that, I'l have to monitor temperatures carefully. Components should be fine at... say 55degC yeah?

I don't think you understand how mineral oil works. It's an exotic and very difficult method to cool with. It is extremely difficult to clean components off after immersion in it. It's an insulator, so components will become extremely hot without circulation, a radiator, and you STILL need a heatsink on your cpu and gfx card.

To make it work, it's $$$$$$$$$, and in the absolute best case scenario you will still not get better results than water cooling. The only professionally made PCs you can buy that use immersion cooling use an exotic and expensive chemical instead of mineral oil. Total cost, including replacing all the components that the oil will kill in a few hours, weeks, or months, is far more expensive than water cooling.

Mineral oil cooling is only for pros on hardware sites with stacks of free hardware and the desire to do something crazy for more pageviews.

My house is a PC graveyard, I have plenty of heatsinks for the job, and a radiator is on the way to cool the oil, which will be circulated through copper pipes(great conductors - further cooling).

To make this work, it's EFFORT, not necessarily just $$$$$$ (or ££££&#163😉.

And maybe I am a hardware pro doing something crazy to get pageviews.

Nah I'm not, I'm doing something crazy to give my tech teacher a heart attack.

For anything intensive I use my main comp, photoshop gaming etc. this is a time filler im not looking to spend much money on, gonna be for internet, music listening to etc. My income is low cos im a student and can only work on saturdays and holidays.
 
Just go ahead and do whatever sounds good, if its a cedar mill pentium D then you will have a chance to hit 4ghz otherwise if its a smithfield your gonna have a flamethrower of a chip even at stock heh.

Theres another guy on here who built a mineral oil PC but i think in the end it was more of a pita than anything as it sprung a few leaks and i guess you would have to dip your hand in oil to tweak it or drain the entire thing, very cool stuff though:

It sounds to me like you just want to have a bit of fun tinkering about with tech which is cool, i built a dual socket slot 1 pentium 2 rig onetime, upgraded it to dual slot 1 pentium 3, then to dual socket 370 tualatin 1.4ghz and then to athlon MP and then to socket 940 opteron 842's. It was fun and it didnt cost much due to selling/buying on ebay. So if your looking for stuff to go with the pentium D ebay is the best bet.

That is exactly what I am doing 😛😛, though I've changed over to either a Pentium 4, or Celeron D, both bought $10 ea on ebay.

<3 EBAY 😀

Though... if it leaks... itl be effortuous to fix.
