it is a Thoroughbred core, don't know if it is A or B. I have ddr333 memory. everything else as default, when i change the fsb to 166 and save the bios, the system does not boot & i have to flip the swith on the PS. then it reboots at 1100mhz saying i have an invalid cpu configuration and to go fix it in the bios. i can change the multiplier and get it to boot (12x133). with a 166fsb, i then bumped up the voltage to 1.6v and it still did not boot.

what are my options with this cpu? is there any other bios setting that i need to change? i was really wanting to get 166fsb so my ram would run at ddr333.

update:
bumped up the voltage to 1.7 & got win2k to boot with 11 x 166 @ 38.5C no load, but it is not stable. what is the safe max voltage for this chip?

Its early morning here. Im not fully awake but I'll try to help.

I believe a program called AIDA32 can tell whether the core you have is an A or B but Im not completely sure. Throw AIDA32 into google and voila :)

Since you can change the multiplier, thats good :). 1700+'s are 1.47 ghz if i remember correctly.... 133x11. Id try 8.5 multiplier with 166 fsb. If that is unstable, your RAM is probably the culprit. If thats the case, increase your VDIMM slightly and check the RAM timings under 'Advanced Chipset Features' (I think). Set it to something quite loose like 7-4-4-3 (3 is the CAS Latency) and see what happens.

The max voltage I pumped through my T'Bred B 1700+ on my ABIT NF7-S Rev 2.0 was 1.75V actual.... set at 1.8V in the bios. I err on the side of caution with voltages and since I wanted to keep the chip for a long time, I decided it was reasonably safe at 1.75V.

Hope it helps.... Some better advice should come along shortly.

cpu-z says the cpu is stepping 0, revision A0. does that mean it is a T'Bred A? tried 8.5x166 and it boots win2k fine @ 35.5C idle. so 1.75V is safe?

Well what are you useing to cool it? Stock cooling? If so dont use more than 1.75 vcore and keep your temps under 50. Grab an aeroflow and 1.8-1.85 vcore will work too aslong as you keep the temps low. Do you remmeber the stepping of the chip so that we can tell you if its a B or an A? Whats stock vcore too? Is it the 1.6 that you listed if so i think its a dut3c which is more than likely a B.
