Overclocking Guides and Tips

I am building a new system. I am not new to building computers. I've built my own systems for the past 15 years, since i was 9. However; This build I am wanting to overclock and really tweak it out. This is a new venture for me.

I'd appreciate any links to good OC guides, for CPU, Memory, Graphics, etc etc... or any personal advice/ideas.

Here is what will be in the box:
--ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
--XFX PVT70FUNDE Geforce 7800GTX 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
--Thermaltake Silent Pure Power W0049 RUD ATX12V/ EPS12V 680W Power Supply
--OCZ Titanium 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

CPU wise i am still debateing (saveing it for last to purchase). The price drops comeing into affect down the chain from AMD have me waiting a week or 10 days befor i order the CPU. I am currently looking at either a 3200+ Venice, a 3800+ X2, or the 4400+ X2 Toledo (2x1mb). I don't think the choice of CPU will affect the method of overclocking, merely the result i will obtain from the overclocking. Though all ideas will be welcomed.

Uses of the system:
Video editing (adobe premire, dvd authouring)
Gameing
wasteing away bits of my life in general.

as always thanks inadvance for the great info i know awaits.

Thanks asic... thats a good idea... but i am not wanting to go ubertweaking... I just want to get some extra performance out of the rig, and get to say i oc'ed it LOL... thats all really. I am not going to be one those adjusting memory timeings for each different game i play types LOL <<< i was being facteous i doubt anyone accutlly adjust memory settings for each game they play.

Well, I once considered Asus (like you probably still do) to be the cream of the crop for mobos. But, unfortunately, those days have come and gone and today they have more QC problems than they ever used to. One can no longer blindly pick an Asus mobo and expect the best. Couple that with many generations of buggy boards, and you should reconsider your devotion to them. I certainly have. EPoX makes a GREAT mobo that was extremely well reviewed by anandtech, which you might also want to consider. Since you're running a single graphics card, I don't think you should pay for SLI, so the EP-9NPA+Ultra NForce4 board would be a great choice. It is a good overclocker, second only to the DFI which is the uber overclocker as you mentioned. But it also just oozes quality right down to the jap caps and the onboard numeric LED POST debug port. And best of all, it can be had for about 110. I just bought one and am currently building a system around it. MANY members here have already expressed their positive feedback of it, and from the looks of it so far, I see what they mean. All that said, the Asus SLI Premium board you purchased did seem to fix the bugs of the Deluxe version, but it has really only been out for a short time now. It is not going to give you the best performance either, even if you don't want to uber overclock. The heat pipe is nice, but also remember that a $5 Zalman passive chipset heatsink will do just as well if you were to add that to another motherboard. And again, you're paying alot more for the Asus in order to gain features you won't use and probably slightly less performance to boot.

Something to consider.

Zebo's guide stickied at the top of this forum is a good guide. Overclocking A64's involves a few more variables than older platforms, but its definately not rocket science and is really rather easy.

And I like your choice of mobo, IMO it is the best NF4 board available for overall performance, stability and overclocking. I am currently running two different Asus boards including the A8N-SLI deluxe (since 12/04) and they are both rock solid and have given me zero problems, and the A8N in particular overclocks like a demon currently running 2.8ghz with an SD3700+🙂. My second choice would be the Epox, DFI has improved from their absolutely horrible boards of the past but still seem to have more problems than I want to deal with, but their NF4 boards are the only ones that offer the voltage options required for extreme overclocking. If you plan on using phase, dry ice, or LN2 and world record benchmarks are your goal then the DFI ultra is the board for you, but if you want top notch overclocking ability and stability you have picked the right board.

The DFI fanbois like to bash the Asus as quirky primarily because the Asus was the first NF4 board by a couple of months and the original deluxe like I have was a bit quirky with the first couple of bios as should be expected with any new ground breaking technology. But what they don't want to admit is that the problems where fixed rather quickly and Asus has out sold DFI at least 10x, and has much lower failure and return rates than the DFI boards. They like to point out the number of problem threads on forums like this, and of course there will be more for the Asus because there have been 10x more sold and most problem posts are related to user error and or poor choice of components.

Both good reply post... i will check out zebo's guide. Thanks to both of you. I haven't ordered the mobo yet, so i could still chose the Epox or DFI if i wanted too. From the reviews i have read, and features offered the Asus seemed to be the best choice. The cost of the mobo isn't an issue; its the quality and performance that i care about.

Here's a good mobo guide one of the forum members put together.

For a CPU, i would recommend the X2 3800+ at the moment, since it sounds like you could utilize what dual-core has to offer.
Otherwise, i'd recommend the 3200+ Venice or 3000+ Venice.

For the mobo, i too no longer like Asus, after using two of their mobos.

I'd say the Epox 9NPA+ Ultra or MSI Neo4 would be your best mobo choices if you don't want to tweak excessively with the DFI Lanparty.
The Abit AN8 Ultra is good also for OCing, & uses a passive (heatipe vs. fan) cooling system, which is nice if you like the silence.

THanks rise4310 that link has TONS of info... and to n7 that guide was good, to compare choices.

The MSI Neo4 was my first choice about 3 weeks ago when i decided to build a new system.. but after the feedback and suggestions here.. everyone said that Asus was the way to go.

The Epox Ultra looks like a nice board though.. so now i am debateing about those two.
