Overclocking--decreases lifespan of CPU?

I was wondering if overclocking (increasing the FSB) would decrease the lifespan?
Or is it only increasing the Vcore (more heat) that decreases the lifespan?
If it's heat related, would having a good heatsink increase the lifespan when overclocking?

Thanks

Yup, it lowers the lifespan from 20 years to 10 years.

and it only occurs if you raise the vcore. if you just raise the fsb it could alter it a little without good cooling.

so, the lifespan wouldn't matter as long as i keep an eye on the temp when overclocking, right?

No, go ahead and raise the Vcore. Raise it by up to 10%. Any more and you're running the risk of fried CPU. :)

You can decrease lifespan of CPU by overheating it (try turn off the fan, or for faster result just remove the entire HSF). Just keep it cool and use common sense (i.e. don't over OC to the point of constant crashes)

Basically.

Your hard drive will fail long before your CPU.

I think the scrap metal from that 10 year old CPU will be worth more than the thing itself. ;)

Running any program on the CPU will decrease its lifespan. Overclocking the CPU without raising the vcore will raise the heat level, so it will decrease the lifespan. Raising the vcore will do the same. However, the CPU will already last so long that by the time it dies it'll already be garbage. If you really want your CPU to last, don't turn the computer on ;)

well, as everyone else mentioned here, as long as you OC it safely, i.e. you don't kill the cpu after a couple of days - which is a significant lifespan shortning (Muhahaha), then go a head and OC.
I belive that 94.7% of the people who OC will get new rigs way before their current system physical life has eneded, simply because its people who care a lot about performance, so they won't be too happy with a 3 year old system...
