Overclocking..... can I undo after being overclocked for years??

first time posting here.. i got a quick question. I have a PC that's being overclocked (P3-700@931 w/ PC133 SDRAM) for about 6 yrs now. Can I go back to normal speed? will it do any harm to the processor? why if you might ask? its because currently I have only 256mb of RAM. I got 512mb, but its PC100. and in order for me to use them, I have to go back to the normal speed on the CPU. feedback anyone? thanks

Yes, you can go back to normal speed given that the CPU isn't damaged in anyway. Sometimes though if the CPU's been running at higher than normal voltage for long periods of time, it may not be able to do stock speed at stock volts anymore. In essence the high voltage may have broken the CPU.

Basically give it a try at 700mhz. If its stable, its fine. If it isn't, up the voltage to the same level as when you're running it at 931. It should work then.

You can, but:

1. most pc100 ram will run @133.

2. you can use a ram divider to keep your clock speed; it's worth trying this and benchmarking since a 25% cut in clock speed is pretty significant, depending on what the system is doing.

thanks for the speedy replies. thats what I thought. its been awhile since i mess around w/ these things. I dont do much stuff on this pc. my fiancee uses it now.. and mostly its iTune, word and some photoshop. i wanted to add more memory but didnt want to spend money on something so old.

The_Lurker - thanks for the voltage tip. i'll make sure i write down that number because doing any chances.
