overclocking Barton 2500+

during a routine install of new heatsink on my 1400 thunder bird, fried the MOBO 🙁 . time for an upgrade 🙂 ... got Barton 2500+ with reatil heatsink, Gigabyte GA-7N400 pro mobo and 512 MB of DDR 2700 ram.... runs like a champ at default settings but want to OC ..... what is the best option ... FSB, multipliers or voltage.
thanks in advance

Shoulda got some 3200 ram to run the bus at 200, but it's kind of late. Try mult. 12.5. 12.5*166=2075, which is decent. From there, you can pump up the fsb, ram permitting.

Even with pc2700 you should be able to set the fsb at 200, well depending on what kind of pc2700 ram, but yea.

uh i really doubt he is going to be 100% stable at pc3200 speeds with pc2700. Bottom line is that he shoulda got pc3200, woulda given him much more headroom for overclocking and somewhat "future-proofed" him for when he needs to make the jump to 400mhz fsb/ddr400.

Idle looks fine. You'd want to be most concerned with your full load temps

See if you can hit 12.5x166 with default vcore

Don't forget to tighten down your memory timings if you can as well. If you wanted to try running at 200mhz, though, go for it, by all means. All you'd have to do is wipe your CMOS if it don't go. Some overvolting on the DIMMs might help as well.

I had some Samsung pc2700 that ran at 200MHz. It liked Cas 2.5-3-3-6. Crank the vdimm to max and the FSB to 200. Boot into memtest85 and run test 5 before going into windows.

Yeah for sure.....mine is running at 3000+ Speeds, I nearly didn't go for PC2700....glad I did. But you can still get quite a decent overlocking without changing the FSB.

Just a question regarding this stuff.....

Would it be better to run at a 200fsb with the mem asyncronous or would it be better to runn at 166fsb with it syncronous? I hear the performance is best with sync.....but would it be made up for with the higher fsb?

At that much of a difference, you're almost certainly better off async. You can lose performance going from like 210 at 1:1 versus 220 at 5:4, but not going from 166 to 200! 🙂

I'd try to sync the FSB and memory, Athlons perform MUCH better no matter what the speeds with a synced bus.
