I'm thinking about buying an AMD rig with:

- A Winchester 90 AMD Ahtlon 64 3500+ CPU
- An ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe MB

and am interested in if it is a good idea to try and overclock this configuration? Also, if I
OC, will I be able to reach stock 3800+ speeds with total stability? How hard is it to OC this configuration? What memory would you recommend with this config if I want to OC?

A lot of questions but I'm learning. Thanks everyone!

You should have no problems overclocking the combo, just be sure you have proper cooling in your system and on the processor itself. The 90nm 3500+ chips are some of the better overclockers, but then again, overclocking is always a gamble. The A8N isn't the best overclocking board in the world, but it should get you to around 240FSB 1:1 before it dies out on you, which will be enough for what you are looking to do. As far as memory goes, try and get any memory with TCCD chips, as they are rated 2-2-2-5 at DDR400 and 3-4-4-8 at DDR533. Some of the better TCCD is the G.Skill LE and LA modules available on Newegg, as well as the Patriot XBL chips if you are on a budget.

Enjoy!

I have a 90nm 3500 on the A8N SLI Deluxe combined with a Zalman 7700CU and it overclocks roughly like this.

1.4V - 2.45ghz
1.45V - 2.5ghz
1.475V - 2.55ghz
1.5V - 2.6ghz

and I've not tried beyond 1.5V, but it can go as far as 1.55V if i recall right. I can get total stability at those speeds with those voltages, so you'll have no problem at all reaching 2.4ghz (3800) on default voltage.

Save yourself some $ and get the 3000+, or 3200+, all the Winchesters seem to clock to the same limits. I have a 3200+ and A8N-SLI @ 2628mhz. The best overclocks seem to come from the 3000+, several guys around the forum here have gotten 2650-2700mhz on the 3000+.

Getting a great O/C chip is always a gamble, but from the recent Winchester poll that Duvie did roughly 75-80% of all winchesters will hit at least 2.4ghz.

Do you need an SLI mobo ??

Just look at all the problems w/ the A8N bios. There are some nice Ultra boards now.

ie. Asus A8N-E, DFI Ultra-D, Chaintech VNF4
