Overclocking AMD's

I plan on buying a new processor here shortly and I want an AMD XP and I know they have different cores like Thoroughbred, Palomino, Barton. My question is what type of core is the most "overclockable?"

PALOMINO:
1600+: youre guaranteed 2100+. BUT, higher voltage, runs hotter, older .18u core.

THOROUGHBRED:
1700+ or 1800+ revision B: will break 2ghz pretty easy. I have an 1800+ rev. A and its running 1834mhz @216*8.5
2100+ REV B: A few good weeks will hit well over 2.3ghz easy. Youll max out your bus before you reach the limits. People were having to raise the multiplier!

BARTON:
2500+: will break 2.3g's on good cooling, but picky about high voltage.

much luck! 🙂

Okay thnaks, I am looking at an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Thoroughbred 2.0ghz, what do you think I could OC it to and what supplies would I need to do this? I also need a motherboard compatible with this setup, any suggestions?

I would save the extra and go with a Xp2100. The chances of the Xp2100 overclocking to what the Xp2400 will do is about the same.

If you get a Tbred B, you might be in for a s urprise and have a VERY VERY fast chip. My xp1700+ is running as a 2600+ right now 🙂

trust me bud, 2100+ B rox your socks! 🙂 Youll save a few greens, and get a possibly higher clock.

Youre gonna need some fast RAM, we're talkin Corsair pc3200 or 3500 (400mhz or 434mhz).

then youre gonna want some kickass motherboard. I myself run a nforce2 which would be best for you. its the best AMD platform so i hear 😉

Im running a Chaintech 7NJS. If you can afford it, weighing in at $178 {Newegg.com}, its pretty good stuff! Comes with a TON of extras, and the new BIOS gives fsb control up to 250mhz! Im currently at 216, which is more than ePox users can say! They have to do modifications just to pass 193. HAH! 🙂

*proud*

check out some reviews of different Nforce2 boards, and see what appeals to you the most.

okay....

don't waste your money on corsair especially when you can get twinmos/winbond for like 1/2 the price...

corsair uses winbond bh-5 memory... twinmos uses the same kind...

save your money 🙂

I`ll most definately side with "Shimmishim" on the Twinmos/Twinmos over Corsair... I have had both and say without a doubt the Twinmos/Twinmos is a heck of a better deal.... 😉
