Overclocking a P4 1.8A (northwood)

I am going to be buying a p4 1.8A pretty soon (within the month), I am wondering if anyone has had success overclocking it like they have with the 2.0A and other northwood cpu's....
For the mobo I am looking at a Abit BD7, because it will lock the pci bus at 33mhz...Would this be the right motherboard if i wanted to overclock? I have 2x 256mb pc2100 crucial ram....will this work?

Has anyone done any overclocking with a p4 1.8A...what speeds could you get out of it? What motherboard are you using?

Please gimme some ideas!!

Hey basic...I am just like you, but I have done a load of research on this in the last couple days....

check out anandtech review on i845 boards...they go so far as saying the pci lock is a waste on this board because it is a poor fsb overclocker and unlikely your pci cards will get out of spec enough to warrant it...

the top 3 I have found for ocing and features...check out my thread started in motherboards to see other features...

1) Asus P4B266 has good ocing, lock pci agp, and has best mem scores
2)MSI Ultra ARU
3) Gigabyte GA-8IRXP

Also do a search on northwood in general hardware...many in that thread oc'd very successfully...

i would go with an Abit Th7 II and rambus if possible

P4 @ 2.6 Ghz with i850 > P4 @ 3.0 Ghz with i845

i remember before the 845 everyone sang the praises of rambus now it seems everyone is has jumped on the 845 bandwagon

Well if i didn't already have two sticks of ddr ram I would consider it.....

On the asus p4b266....i found two things:
ASUS P4B266-C FOR INTEL P4 SOCKET 478 PIN CPU (BULK) $114.95
ASUS P4B266 845D INTEL P4 478 PIN W/USB 2.0 /DDR /AUDIO( NO LAN) $155.95

the -c model looks like its the same as the p4b266 except it only has 2 ddr slots and it doesn't have the usb 2.0 or built in audio (which i dont really need anyways...)

I am curious if there are any other advantages buying the more expensive one over the cheaper -c model though...any ideas?

Don't ya remember tomshardware dual between an overclocked penitum 4 and athlon xp? The Pentium 4 @ 2600MHZ on RAMBUS beated the pentium 4 @ 3000mhz on DDR RAM cuz THE HIGHER YOU OVERCLOCK THE MORE bandwidth hungry the Penium 4 gets! SO either get an Asus P4T-E or Abit TH7II.:D

Of course one should remember THG did use what is currently the slowest DDR P4 chipset widely available.

The only NW 1.8GHz o'c I've seen thus far got it up to 2.13GHz.

basic, no need to flame or anything here. Indeed, rambus works best for P4. If you already have DDR, selling it on the FS/FT forum is a good idea also. That stuff is worth a lot now :)

Basic, IMHO, the Athlon XP 1800+ on KT266A would probably be faster than P4 1.8Aghz on i845 or i850. Is it possible that you're losing speed by doing such an "upgrade?"

In addition, since your components are top of the line, if you do decide to sell the stuff, a lot of people may want what you have to sell. From what I've noted, at FS/FT, older components are much harder to sell, while top of the line stuff is actually in demand :)

It's actually because i need stability over performance atm for what i do...but thanks for asking, yeah i was hoping the stuff would sell .. it is top of the line :)

Out of curiousity...how much do you think everything would be worth?

I was thinking of selling everything for about $325 ... the motherboard and cpu are both new, and the heatsink has been used for a little over a month, has been cleaned with goo off, and is in perfect condition... I saw this all retailing for > $350...so I would think this would be a fair price...but I could be wrong...

Rand do a search...there are many guys in here that have got it up to 2.2ghz..one guy got it to 2.25 with 1.65v...so 2.2ghz seems fairly common as the board only needs to get to 125mhz fsb...All aircooled with retail hsf...

basically he has stated ocing it and I am sure he is considering reports here of many getting them to 2.2ghz. If he can get it to 2.2ghz that would be slightly faster then the 2000+xp and who nows since the fsb is oc'd the chip would be running at 500mhz. His memory bandwidth will be increased and the p4 can use it...

For me I am coming off of a 1.4tbird which is probably about 20 percent plus behind the xp1800+..so for me it will be an increase...ofcourse if I go that route.

I think the stability has more to do with the motherboard chipsets imo...because I have noticed that every intel chipset based mobo i have used has been way more stable and compatable than the via ones, (i have used the kt133a and the kt266a)....anyways, my celeron 300a @ 504 was VERY stable, i dont see why this wouldn't be :)

I have also been reading on hardocp about the 1.6a which looks like it overclocks to 2.2ghz with a higher fsb than the 1.8--improving memory bandwith and all that...its also about $50 cheaper in price, so I am really considering that now....

what voltage did they get that 1.6a to, to achieve that 2.2ghz? I would watch it if it requires too high of a voltage mod to get it....I have seen 1.8's get 2.2 easy and go slightly over...I have seen 2.25,2.3 and even a few 2.4's all with retail cooling, but some have to push the voltage to above recommended levels for the chip...It can certainly do it but can drastically reduce the operating life cycle of the cpu.
