Hi,

Does anyone know if i can overclock a opteron 165 or 170 to an FX-60 and make it stable? My brother tells me that there is no way, but i thought since you guys are real smart then you would probably know.

Also is worth spending the extra cash for the 170?

people have hit and past FX-60 speeds but the ones past that use none air cooling most of the time. Only reason to get an FX-60 if you are shooting twoards 3GHZ with phase change or LN2.

on 165/170 you have a good chance getting 2600..OCing is always YMMV but your brother is wrong

I sold a 165@2610 dual prime 95 stable...my opteron 170 is currently at 2700...both on air(SI 120/Nexus fan)

there others doing much better than me on air....

2800-3000 has been done with numerous chips on air...few chips do 2900+ on air...need a real good cpu...luck of the dram

Phase change allows many to exceed 3000

SO AIR can hit 2600+ and has for many

My 165 can do 2600 dual-prime stable (at 1.5V), but BF2 isn't stable above 2510 or so...

Same, opteron 165 @ 2.65 with 1.375V, stock cooling. I havent seen many ppl not attain 2.5, most seem to be able to do 2.6, but 2.7 is a bit harder, requires better then stock cooling?

PS: Good airflow in the case is absolutely essential.

Yes, most can hit 2.6 without too much trouble.

As for spending the extra for a 170, it depends how much extra, with the opteron 170 you have a 10x multiplier to work with instead of a 9x, so you will have to raise the HTT less to attain a higher speed.

With Opteron 165 - 289 x 9 =2601mhz
With Opteron 170 - 260 x 10 =2600mhz

I think you all have been fooled into thinking his "brother" doesn't believe an opty will hit fx-60 speeds.

Just like when someone says, "My friend has an STD and asked me to pick up the proper ointment from your store, Mr. Pharmacist."

Hehe, i had an X2 that did 2.87 dual prime, now i've got a 170 incoming and i'm hoping for 2.9-3.0. You bet your ass things things will break through FX60 speeds. The good ones do 2.75 Ghz with stock frigging volts!

Good call. I kept reading, and no one seemed to be picking it up.
