Hi
I'm buying a 1,3GHz t-bird (266MHz bus)and an asus a7v133 (via kt133A) board and 256mb pc133 mem. with a GF3 in it.
I'd like to know if there's any way to overclock the cpu or motherboard without having to open the case. Are T-birds locked? does that mean the cpu will never overclock unless I unlock it? In case I don't want to unlock it is there any way to push the mobo a little by raising the fsb? If I'm not wrong that won't change the cpu speed but will still make the system a bit faster...right?
Finally, is it worth buying a cpu fan even if I don't unlock the cpu?

Thank you VERY much.

Tbirds that are 1.2 Ghz and above come factory unlocked so you don't have to do it yourself. Yes you can overclock by just raising the fsb from the bios and not fiddling with the motherboard. If you bump it up to high though you might need to change some voltage settings. And finally, YES YOU DEFINATELY NEED A CPU FAN. You also need a decent heatsink as well. Tbirds run hot so running a heat sink without a fan is a quick way to shorten the life of your processor.

Running a t-bird without a heatsink is not only a quick way to ruin the cpu, it is the fastest way, PERIOD! Using a heatsink without a fan mounted will only prolong, by a short time, the inevitable.

NeoVibe:

Check out AMD's Website (when it is back on line) for some good info on HSF and power supply requirements. I would give you the direct links but their site is down right now. Also cruise the cases and cooling forum for some good suggestions on various HSF setups.

Also, go to ArticSilver's web site HERE for some good instructions on how to apply Artic Silver to your Heat Sink/CPU.

They are unlocked from the factory???

what the hell.. how come I never knew this... are you sure???

I have a 1333 and I haven't touched the CPU itself, If I can change the X without having to do anything I'll go try it after I know for sure..

hmm

I also have the 1.33Ghz which you are getting. It is unlocked and I overclock it to 1.5Ghz using a Alpha Pal6035 Heatsink with a YS Tech fan. 137 FSB x 11 Multiplier. I bumped the voltage up also. I use an Iwill KK266-r mobo and I really like it. Though now the ECS Socket A K7S5A SiS® 735 chipset motherboard with On-Board LAN Port is a very nice choice(higher performance) and much cheaper - $65. Also what is cool about the ECS board is that it enables you to use SDRAM or DDR due to available slots.

All 1.2 Ghz & above is unlocked.

A good & stable O/Cing required a combination of multiplier & FSB adjuctment. U have to try a different combination in order to know which is best for u.

1.33 Ghz CPU generally able to hit 1.4 to 1.5 Ghz easily. Again there is no guarantee as O/Cing is not depending on the CPU alone.

U'll need a decent HSF and a good termal compound + a good case cooling to O/C.
