Overclocked 7800GT...too much?

Alright, well considering I'm a complete noob to overclocking video cards (can do CPU's though :D), I basically decided to just utilize the Nvidia Forceware drivers. I went into the Nvidia Driver display, clicked on "Clock Frequency Settings" selected "Performance 3D", and just clicked on Detect Optimal Frequencies. The drivers automatically overclocked my 7800GT to:

490 Mhz Core Clock Frequency

1.18 Ghz Memory Clock Frequency

Now, thats fine and dandy all, since I'm finally making use of the Arctic Cooling NV Silencer that I purchased and installed recently, but when playing games, I experience these small...glitches. I have no idea what they are called, but basically imagine when you move around in-game, these small white jagged lines protrude on your screen, on and off, on and off. Are these called artifacts? To correct it, what should I do?

Those are artifacts...you need to lower your clock speeds.

This is what I do...run rthdribl while overclocking your card. For you, start out where you are at. It should artifact up pretty quickly.

Basically it's a matter of just lowering your clock speeds. You never know though, you might be able to OC your GPU higher, but your memory is already too high, or the opposite.

So just try things out.

I have found that I can overclock Higher in rthdribl than in a game. I would do two things: get rivatuner and up one of the variables one at a time, just like you do with cpu overclocking find out what your core can do then find out what your mem can do without artifacts. Hope this helps..

Instead of using Rivatuner, think I can just use the built-in Nvidia tweakers? I mean, since they are part of the drivers, I'm guessing Nvidia has tested it for stability and whatnot.

Thanks guys for your help.

sure you can use coolbits. I just find my results to be better with rivatuner. It can control more things, but if you are new to overclocking videocards it would be best to use coolbits untill you know how your card will handle. I also don't artifact as much when using rivatuner. Hope this helps.

ok I'm running rthdribl-I don't quite get it. What exactly am I looking for? I'm messing around with the frequences as we speak nothing's happening.

Ok do you see where the fps are on that program. You need to watch those but not as closely as just watching it for those artifacts we told you about. I would let it run for about 30min and see. That would give it enough time to make your card nice and toasty :D
