I read somewhere that you can overclock your old 14.4-33.6 modem to 56k somewhere. Does anyone remember how to do this.

nateholtrop: LMAO :D and I agree ;)

evergreen96: Some companies released updates for their modems. That is the only thing I know of though.

Yeah you can upgrade the modem's firmware to support 56k but only if the manufacturer releases an update. As far as I know the only modems that you can upgrade to 56k is 33.6k modems. I may be wrong though.

and even some of those require a replacement DSP Chip, such as US Robotics in order to do so, and they charged 'ya to do it. Pretty much @ this point, snag a cheap winmodem or get broadband.
To me upgrading the modem is going from a coffee stirrer to a straw... both of them still suck.

Not really overclocking per se, more like using a different transmission standard over the same medium.

If the firmware doesn't support it, you might be able to flash it.

If the hardware is physically incapable of supporting the standard (almost all < 33.6K modems), get a new modem. Get a winmodem.

If you use Linux or plan to soon, DO NOT GET A WINMODEM. Most PCI 56K modems are largely software based, supported only in Windows. All ISA and external modems are hardware modems.
