This board has softmenu3 in the bios. What good is changing the multiplier if pentium4 chips are locked? I have a 1.8 ghz p4 and cant o'clock it. Then i tried upping the fsb-the board locks up with error C1 (very early in the boot sequence) even when i set the fsb to 102 mhz. (up from 100 mhz) Using samsung pc800 rdram 512 mb.

any suggestions? does this mobo promise more than it delivers? why is a 1.6a chip so overclockable?

Try increasing the Vcore of the CPU and power to the memory. Rambus mbs are difficult to OC because your memory, Rdram pc800, is running close to its maximum speed already. In order to OC with this mb you will probably have to get a stick of Rdram PC1066 at a cost of about $200 just to get 2.4 ghz (FSB 133) out of your p4 1.8....

That's close to the cost of a 2.4 ghz p4 chip. Is it better to spend the money on new rdram to up the fsb or just get a new CPU?

1) Is your cpu 1.8A ?(northwood core?)
2) Look under softmenu and do "disable error checking"
3) you dont need PC1066 to overclock the cpu. If you have a 1.8A, you can turn up the fsb to 133 and change the ram multiplier to 4:3. ( dont remember how it is shown in the bios, may be as 400/300 option.)

no just a 1.8ghz socket 478. I thought it was a northwood but now im not sure, is there a non 'a' variant of the northwood?

I did drop the mem cycles to 3 from 4 and got the fsb to 110. I upped the cpu voltage to 1.85 v. Temp is 40*. I dont know what the 'current draw multiplier' in rambus settings of softmenu is all about- i left it at 5x. Anthing above 110 on the fsb , it wont post. I think it's the pc800 rdram from samsung that's holding me down. Anyway, with this measly oclock, my guts cant tell the difference.
