Why can't I overclock with Win2000 Pro? I use to have Win98SE without any problem at all........just wondering why....anybody knows?

Windows 2000 Pro SP1
Asus P3V4X bios 1005
Asus V6800 DDR GeForce256
PIII 700Mhz Slot 1
256MB PC100 SDRAM (Infineon)
Soundblaster Live
Plextor 12x10x32A
Creative 52x CDROM
Maxtor 7200RPM 20GB

Thanks ahead.

Goodness!!!!!

I somehow found what the problem why I can not overclock, setting was set to "AUTO" can't remember what is it (I think SDRAM/something?)but when I set it to 1/1, everything is great, I tried 110 that made mu 700 - 770...very as of now, will try higher next time see what happens...

I've found W2K Pro and ME to be more demanding OS's and more likely than 98 to crash a marginal CPU. Are you saying it won't overclock at all, or you just can't reach the same top end?

Heh, I thought you were going to tell us some way to overclock the operating system (it sure could use it).

My C300a@450 was running fine on 98 at default voltage. In W2K, I got randon reboots. Pulled my hair out trying to find the cause, and eventually upped the voltage to 2.1V. This helped, but the occasional reboot still occurred. At 2.2V, things are rock-solid again.

I've got a D700 running stable at 1083MHz with Win2K for an OS.

I havent had any problems with Win2K compared to 98, but the OS definately does matter.
Linux seems more sensitive than most other OS's to me, though my Duron600@900 works in Linux too.

i run my tbird 900 @ 1050 fine on win98 and win2k pro.
try running your memory slower like 333, and see what happens (if u have it higher than its supposed to be)

No problems here with a 550mhz Athlon running at 650 in windows 2000. 650? I just realized I need a new CPU. I can't wait for a DDR setup!!

I've got a Athlon 550@800 too, and no problems in Win2k. WinME however i can't even install it. Keep getting cab errors.

I have a cel2 566@850 in Win2k pro. I was using 98SE. When I switched to Win2k i also got the random reboots and had to up my voltage from 1.75 to 1.85. Run solid now and have had no problems for about a month... Good Luck.

Win2K is just alot more sensitive. For me I found that if my RAM is set too high.... I get a KMODE BSOD.... If I OC too high I get a Kernel Failure BSOD... helps me find out what I set too high :)

Win2ks is not necessarily more sensitvie to overclocking.

For me, win2k allows me to run my chip at the same exact speed as in win9x or winme, with the exception that in 2k i can drop the voltage .05.

Hmm, my P3 733 overclocks to 770mhz, but when I try to get it higher Win2k doesn't even start up... Ofcourse, that might be because to run at 825Mhz, the FSB should be 150Mhz, but 2/3 of my RAM is PC-100... so running 100mhz dimms on 140mhz isn't so crappy...or? :)
