The 7900GT KO Superclock specs:
580 MHz GPU
1580 MHz (effective) Memory

The 7950GT KO 512MB
560 MHz GPU
1450 MHz (effective) Memory

Do you think just by using Coolbits, getting it open in the Nvidia drivers adding it into the registry is good enough for a overclock on the cards, and could I push the 7950s to the same speeds as the 7900 Superclocks 580/1580 without problems?

Does overclocking video cards put a strain on any of the other parts?

My Asus 7950gt 512mb goes to 650mhz core and 1560mhz memory just from what the auto-overclock in the driver selects. I have not tried pushing it any further yet. However, your mileage may vary.

Overclocking your videocard should not place any additional strain on the rest of your system (other than possibly increased power consumption).

I am no PSU expert, but I think 520w of quality power supply should be enough for your setup.

I'm no SLI expert through, so hopefully someone with more knowledge comes into this thread

A 8800GTX is going to be faster especially where its really shader intensive.
Then theres heat/noise/power consumption which will be much higher using 7950GT SLI.
Also theres the IQ issue where the G80 IQ is MUCH better than 7950GT SLI.

Just because theres no DX10 games, G80 is useless? Its the BEST DX9 card and will play DX9 games VERY well. You can take advantage of high level of AA, AF quality that the 7950GT SLi cannot offer as well. It has DX10 capabilities that will be used within the coming 2~3 months, but in the meanwhile it will be used mainly for DX9 titles.

Since its a single card, it doesnt suffer SLi limitations either.

Unless youve bought the 7950GT SLi. I judge that it was a waste of money if you did. The resale value too will be much lower than e.g buying a 8800GTS.

I would use the 8800 card over a 7 series SLi rig for the ease of Vsync usage alone.

I was also tempted by the 7950GT's (especially the XFX passive cooled ones) since I could throw em in SLi and have a more stable platform with less driver bugs than what the G80 could currently give me. Plus, 7950GT's in SLi would show some decent performance increases over my X1900XT.

But, when I took into account the cost of going with more older tech than less newer tech, I decided that an 8800 would be a better bargain. If you have two cards already and their EVGA ones, I'd do a step-up with them if you can to a G80. The only thing I can see the 7950GT SLi setup having over the G80 is better AA and better drivers. One card that competes with two other ones is a better buy IMO.

Well these where upgraded to me for free from Evga from 7900GT KO Superclocks. I was always having problems with the 7900s so Evga let me upgrade into the 7950s.

Well let me put it this way, I personally met Jen-Hsun Huang and we had a talk, he told me it's best to stay away from the bleeding edge, and stay a step or two behind it.

So LOOK guys if the CEO of Nvidia advises against going bleeding edge why would I want to go with 8800s since that is what they are at the moment.

Right now YES there may be some advantages, BUT the cards still have not reached their potential. No drivers or games support them the way they are meant to be played, so personally I want to wait for some updates to come along.

Guys I bought into the bleeding edge hype years ago, and that's all it is, and YES even Jen-Hsun Huang will tell you the same thing.

Truthfully if the market/consumers weren't so demanding for bleeding edge, 8800 cards, along with all other cards wouldn't be released so quick. I me think about it. Hardware out before software can really support it, LOL
