this may be a very stupid question and if it is forgive me =)... but.. is it at all possible to increase the max refresh rate my comp can handle. right now my max refresh rate is only 75hz @ 1600x1200. is there a possible way to increase that without damaging my monitor..

thanks!

I am no expert but what I know about monitors is the higher you run the monitor like in its max refresh rate the sooner it will burn out. I don't know of any way to overclock your monitor and if you did I bet it would be even worse on it than even running it at max. I always buy my monitors to run at there recommended 85hz or higher. Never do I run it in max resolutions. Sorry I couldn't be of any help, you probally already knew this info.

I have a Nvidia Geforce2 card and running windows 2000. At first my refresh rate would not go above 60hz. Then I learned 2000 and Xp had some type of refresh block. So I downloaded this program called Nvidia Refresh Fix and it allowed me to change the refresh rates. It gave me warnings when I increased the refresh rate. I knew my monitor could handle the level I set it too and I think I could set it higher which would kinda be overclocking it. I don't remember where I found it but If you like a can email it to you if you have a Nvidia Card and 2000 or Xp.

1. You cannot overclock your monitor.
2. RAMDAC on your videocard is what controls the videocard's refresh rate. The higher the MHz of the RAMDAC, the more pixels it can push this the better refresh rate.
3. Your monitor's manual will tell you the Max. refresh rate at each resolution. You can try going higher (if your videocard supports that) by using PowerStrip or another refresh-rate control utility, but you will probably have your monitor go out of sync and not display anything. It's not likely to break it unless you try REALLY high refresh rates.

You can try to 'OC' your monitor by running the Powerstrip application, it allows to select custom refresh rates. For example, you could go 85 Hz at that resolution. Personally, I don't think it's a good idea. If you want higher refresh rates, lower the resolution. It will enhance readability also.

Sure you can do this but either you get distorted images or nothing at all. Worse, it can possibly damage your monitor so NEVER drive refresh rates above what your monitor is capable of.

The major exception is a LCD monitor. They don't really have refresh rates in that they are staring pixels and not scanned. Most will over an equivalent to a refresh rate. I just replaced my 19-in Hitachi CM771 with a 19-in ViewSonic VX900, and it really is sharp picture - especially when connected digitally.
