How would a mild overclock of a video card, say a 6800gt to ultra speeds, effect the lifespan of a video card?

It would lower its lifespan from 20 years to 10 years.

It could still last that long, by which time it would have be practically worthless anyway!

That is really impossible to determine, since not all GT's will oc to Ultra specs. if you look at from that perspective, overclocking one of these cards will reduce its lifespan to 0.

I've never had an Oced peice of hardware die on me. Things like HDD's, optical drives, PSU's, and RAM that ran at stock speeds have though.

Use a utility to dynamically OC the card... crank it up when you launch a game, let it idle when you're doing desktop stuff. There's no need to have the GPU and mem ganked up when you're at the desktop, so when you're not gaming, let the card relax.
