got a new geforce 6200 AGP to replace my geforce 3 ti500

3 questions:
1. is that a reasonable upgrade? Haven't installed and run tests yet.
2. how do I tell if my 6200 is 64-bit or 128-bit? It was the compusa special on BF and had no documentation on that
3. How do I tell if I can turn on extra pipes? Any downside in trying?

1. about the ame speed stock, maybe the 6200 is slightly slower?
2. where did you buy it from? alos riva tuner might be able to tell you(not sure, i havent used rivatuner or neededd to use it fro a long time)
3. rivatuner will let you unlock the pipes, downside is youll find out they dont unlock and cry because the card you bought ot replace the gf3 ti500 is actually slower. It's a good idea to have a pci card on the side though just in case the unlock goes horrifically wrong so you can reverse it.

1. in terms of performance, maybe you won't notice any difference. but what do you get is support for directx 9.0. the 128-bit version may give you some performance boost
2. you can use rivatuner for that. on the main screen (like this), it should tell you 64 or 128-bit. like mine's here is 256-bit
3. you also use rivatuner for that (link), but i'm afraid newer revisions of 6200 have their pipes disabled in hardware. so no chance of unlocking

64 bit 6200s have 4 memory chips on the pcb. 128bit has 8 generally thats how it works.= if it tsop chip.

all agp 6200s are based on the nv44 core that the 6600 is based on , so they should be unlockable, pci-e 6200s tend to be the nv43 turbocache variant and cant be unlocked.

wow i guess having ability to unlock better than 128 - i have 4 memory chips. I guess my install will be fun. I boot win98, win2k, winxp, and mandrake all on the same box, so, uninstalling drivers is going to be a hassle before I can put in the card.

Fun fun fun! Thx for quick tips.

Well, I have an NV44 core, 64-bit so I from what I've read, that's not 8-openable (against what hans007 said), but I'll try eventually. I have an Athlon XP 2100+ overclocked a little bit to 138Mhz bus, and that comes up as a 2200+ with 768Meg. In any event, I'm getting just shy of 2000 in 3dMark 2003. Haven't tried 2005 yet and haven't tried any OC's. My old 64-meg Geforce3 TI 500 was just over 1000 on this machine, so I guess that's a reasonable bump for $49. In any event, I'll be experimenting with OC'ing soon enough.

What's a good target # to expect for my system?

Also my card had a passive heatsink and no ramsinks at all, so I guess I might be needing a fan for the GPU and ramsinks?

ram heatsinks are not required. they might decrease the temp by a few degrees, not worth it. personally, i would of bought a used 9700/9800 pro for $50.

Well, I got what I got. Anyhow, so now I go to overclock, and the nVidia driver detects what I can overclock to etc. I knock those settings down a little bit and the computer hangs - ideas? I can do a negligable (1mhz) overclock too and it still hangs.
