Overall power usage (watts or rather $)

I remember reading this awhile back measuring the amount of power your system uses in Standby and in the off mode, and it basically said it was about the same, since most systems had constant power to their ethernet port for NIC wake-up. I was wondering if anybody knew if that was the case or better yet, how much power is ones computer using (standard setup, whatever that means) on Standby.

I wonder if it is worth it to shut it down for power consumption reasons. If not I'd probably leave it on and create macros to pop up in the morning for me.

Depends on the PSU and MB. Usually, OFF draws less power (average is around 10-15 watts). You can completely kill the power by turning off your surge protector or the power switch commonly found at the back of the power supply.

I always turn off the power at the surge protector when not in use.

Yeah, what's the stats on Hibernation. It seems like there is a difference between hibernation and standby but I've never seen anything that describes it in lenght. I'm going to google it, but if anybody knows please post in the thread.

Hibernation is more than OFF but less than Standby. A small amount of power is applied to the MB and RAM. Turn off at the surge protector and you will not use any electricity. Boot time is only about 30 sec with a decent PC.

Yeah, hibernation makes me a little nervous though. Don't know what's going to work afterwards. I have a USB keyboard and my USB mouse is connected to that keyboard. I kind of remember my computer going into a permanent coma. I can try it again and see.

Second question is what you guys would use to schedule some automatic processes. I can write a couple of macros, but since I only know Excel API and not the windows API there will be a learning curve, and easy "DOS" batch file type things I can do? I guess I can always just do scheduler too.

Wait are you saying that when you shut you're computer off completely it still draws power????????

When you use:

start-->shutdown

Yes, it still uses power.

Sometimes your Mobo will have a little green light on it that stays lit even after you shut down your PC. It is off, but there is still power running through it.

Flip the switchbehind the PSU or turn off the surge protector and that green light will shut off.

wake on lan generally cause alot of pcs now adays have their nic card always on... i also think it might have to do with keeping the bios settings without draining the mobo battery... but i'm not sure about that at all.. but it would make sense to use it for that.
