Over two hours to DEFRAG. - WHY ???

Neos

Senior member
I defrag often.
Lately it is taking well over an hour (sometimes over two hours) to defrag my 8 gig Maxtor.
Is this normal? It has not taken this long in the past.

Thanks,
Andrew in AL

do you have all your background programs off? if not, close everything but (if using win 98) "Sys Tray" and "Explorer".

Hope it works!

I will give it a shot. Hope it will work, but this is not one of those times when it starts over and over. It is just continually slow - or seems that way.

Thanks
Andrew

that seems pretty normal for win98se from my experiences...
but some things that make it take longer are
1. as mentioned background programs and processes
2. low free harddisk space...

Get the defrag.exe file from a friend's copy of WinME (NOT XP, that's totally different and I don't think it will work) and replace yours with it! It works much better (faster and far fewer restarts) and works fine with Win95 and Win98.
There is also a place to DL it from the web along with instructions for newbies : DefragME
And as another said, you should endeavor to keep at least 10% of your drive space free as defrag needs scratch space while it's working.

Edit: I just did a google search and found that there is a 'command-line' Defrag.Exe in WinXP - Linkage - and the article says that you won't get a full defrag unless you have 15% free space on each volume!!! I don't know if that applies to the older versions or not.bh.
