Over & Over again...I can't figure

Ok wizards, guys & gals,

The deal should be very simple. I need the digital/ DVI-I cable for the SONY SDM-N80 flat panel monitor.

Now, I wouldn't bother y'all if I hadn't already done my research and actively attempted to find the g.damn thing. BUT, - I can't find it.

Sony says, "No, we don't make or offer one for that monitor." The guy couldn't even recommend a store or source that could.

Now I've found plenty of stores selling DVI cables, but I can't even figure out which one is correct. The manual for the display simply says a "DVI-I" cable. Well, when searching several places selling these things, - that's much to general a statement to choose the right one.

Gateway sells a few in their on-line store, but theystart off describing it as a "VGA to DVI" cable. WTF?! Aren't they ALL going to be goin' into or through the VGA? I called them directly too, they passed me around to a few people, then "The guy who would know" gets on the phone & tells me he's never heard of any monitor with a kick-out box. I told the monitor's not new, its been around, and a DVI cable should be available for it. He said "not exactly." He says SONY does such "strangely bizarre things", that "they're NOT AT ALL always supported by other medias and components."

OK.

I give. I give....

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Sorry, but I don't seems to understand what you really need?

Are you using DVI-IF out video card? or regular H-15 out?

Doesn't your monitor come w/ any cable at all? If so, what type of "head" is supposely connecting to your video card?

Or do you simply need entire cable from your Monitor to Video card? If this is the case, what type of connector is on your monitor? (if you don't really know, perhaps, you can kind of describe the shape and size of the connector.)

Right-on, Ripthe system!

Sony Style/Store can't help.
Gateway didn't help, - although they sell several cables.

Someone out there has got to be running the same monitor on a real DVI cable.
Right?!

One more thing...
Since there's a break-out box between the video card and display, is there truely going to be a digital connection? Or, is it compromised in between by the very same g.damn break-out box?

Excellent Q's TimeKeeper.

I swapped in the (potential waste of money) Radeon 8500 DVI back whenever it came out. Thus, I imagined the damn thing should be readily available to cope with a DVI-pin type, as I have observed. Other types of DVI cables abound however.

I guess I'm not at all sure if its a DVI-IF??

What's the -IF denote?

DVI-IF=Integ rated. (female)
DVI-DM=Digital male. (male)
DVI-AM=Analog male. (male)
DVI-DF=Digital female. (female)

From what I know, the monitor accept both analog and digital signal. The question still remain.....What section of cable do you need? and what type of head?

oK.

I should clarify, - my bad.

The cable I need can only go from the video card to the break-out box.

The display has its own cable connecting it to the break-out; thereby utilizing one cable for carrying video, sound and whatever data needs between the two.

okay, we are getting somewhere....

What type of connector is ON that "break-out" box?

male? female? looks like regular DVI connector? or Centronic style?

DVI-DM according to you (TimeKeeper) would be my best guess according to the looks of the ports. They each look to accept a Male feed.

But, am I really wasting my time here?

How can I figure out the connection capabilities of the universal cable going from the break-out to the display itself. It must be Analog/Digital, but at what compromise? ---well, I'll just forget that part for now.

Is there going to be a visible difference once I'm running on DVI you figure?

THANK YOU MUCH FOR THE true EFFORT & HELP.

Much appreciated, TimeKeeper.

I'll look into your link.

ON the break-out itself are a few Female ports. One for analog,- which I'm running now, and another for Digital.

g.Damn, this should be so simple. The very same-type Female DVI port is on the Radeon, I'll try and draw it:

l8888888--l

....this representing the verticle Female-pin openings, with a sudden horizontal dash opening at its end.

Is there going to be a visible difference once I'm running on DVI you figure?
On my NEC FP1350X CRT (not a flat-panel, a CRT that has a true digital input), I could see a marked noticeable difference in clarity between DVI and analog inputs. I had a thread about my experiences with DVI on my CRT here. In my experience with my monitor it makes a substantial difference. But I have a CRT and you have a flat-panel so YMMV. Good luck finding the cable though.
