"funny thing is, lite on used to be the worst drive on the market, but no one except the people that worked in the shops seems to remember."
when cusa had those iomega 12x cdrw that were plextor/sanyo/lite-on for $99 ar (ages ago :) about two years), people were literally running back to the store to take those lite-ons back
reminds me of toyota, honda, hyundai, sampo...

Found a firmware hack to burn those 4X RICOH discs at 8X on the 851 HERE

what kind of hassle?

i'm curious as to what sort of convincing you all use to get the substitute when they aren't offering it to begin with?

just mention that you heard of someone else getting it subbed?

Heh, they said at our first OM no substitutions, but the second one I called in my city said they have tons of substistutions... not gonna complain though, they are both about the same distance away...

Just got a spindle today. Media info is:

Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Media code/Manufacturer ID CMC MAG R01
Format Capacity Not Formatted
Free Blocks 405405696
Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.70GB)
Book Type DVD+R
Media Type DVD+R

Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.4x 3324KBps

The Khypermedia 10 pk of +R I have is the same code - CMC MAG R01.

Well, free crap is still crap. I learned this after picking up one too many FAR generic CD-R spindles. I burned some VCDs on them, and the video would start to skip towrads the end of the disc. Who knows how long the disc will stay readable.

Same with DVDRs. The time spent burning and watching a movie, only to find out that the last chapter or two skips or is unreadable - even though the recording software says the disc passed post-burn data verification - isn't worth the savings, IMO.

I don't mean this post to be a thread crap (even though I did use the word above :) ), but there are a lot of maybes with more generic DVDR discs, and just sharing my experiences so that others can benefit from them. Besides, I think 4x Riteks are pretty close to $40 shipped (for a 50 spindle), with the 1x/2x ones even less.

You can also think of it in price/gig. People are willing to pay $10 for a TY CD-R 50 spindle, which amounts to about 28 cents a gig. The 4x Riteks listed above are 17 cents a gig. So it's really not that much to pay for more peace of mind.

Tiembo - All that's entirely true. Nobody should use cheap-a$$ dvds for stuff they really want to keep. In my case these cheapo dvds play perfectly in my dvd player, even at the end of the movie. So, for me, they are a good deal.

Yeah, I guess I should've added a "YMMV" to my post, heh.

No substitution at the Manchester, CT store. They said they expected more in on Thu-Fri. I should call the Enfield store tomorrow.

Picked up the sub in Austin, TX West 5th street store. Thanks SnoopDODoubleG for the Austin info! 2 left in the store as of 5:30pm today. Out the door price is $86.59. Make sure you get them to adjust the price, the kid at the register was gonna charge me full price.

Drive I got in the Pacific Digital box was a Lite-On 811s. Serial number on the box was 48xxxx. I guess 48xxxx does not mean an 851 drive but I'm not complaining.

Picked up a PD drive in Tupelo, MS that was a Lite-on 811S for $85-ish out the door. They are bringing them out of the stock room, so I have no idea how many are left.

Still using mine. The only time I've ever stood in line waiting for a store to open. Mad dash to the counter.

Wonder if the black bezels are regional...

(came off a renegade pallet at some wherehouse or something)

I found one store today (Military and Battlefield in Chesapeake) that
had over a dozen left and I could see into the lock up closet, so I asked the
guy to check if any had the black bezel sticker. No dice.

Anyone found black bezels in VA (Hampton Roads)

Three other stores (Military Circle, Lynnhaven, and Greenbrier) had none left at all.
Got mine earlier at Military Circle, but it was a white one.

Hi,

I got the Pacific Digital. Haven't opened the box.

The sticker on the side says "PN: U-30201".
The serial # goes 4303...
Below the UPC, it says 'U-30201-RV1".

Based on posts from people that got a Liteon, this doesn't look like one, right?
gard

serial #: Pxxxx..(1st character is P) =BTC
serial #: 4xxxx(1st character is 4) = Lite-On
part number is the same for both models
So you should have a Lite-On.

My Serial # is 481351XXXXXX and it's also a Lite-On 851S. Looks like serial #'s beginning with 48 are 851 drives, Serial #'s beginning with 43 are 811 drives. I believe that the 851 drives replaced the 811 drives, but I don't know whether they're any better. Mine has a manufacture date of 12/03.

Thank you Rich for the info..I,m heading ther tomorrow Miami,FL

so i thought id add my experience
bought the magicspin, then read this.
my store was out of both,
so a couple days later i called and got a PD
but it was a fricken BTC
so i brought it back and the most helpful guy in the world looked on the computer and checked EVERY OM in CT, and only a couple MIGHT have had it.
so the guy found the actual # and ordered a lite-on for $80 from OM's main warehouse and it is supposed to arive at my house within a week. no shipping.
so if all goes well, ill get my Lite-on and return my magic spin, and be very happy.
this guy was a RARE find, so id say my experience was WAY Beyond YMMV.

FYI, folks... those of you buying the 50-pk Memorex DVD+R at Best Buy might end up with a stack of CMC MAG F01 discs. I burned a couple last night (on my 811S) at 4X and they came out perfect, so don't fear!
