Over 3000 cars abandoned.

Supposedly a lot of those huge projects have been put on hold, scaled back, or canceled as demand has imploded.

The UAE has however put a stopper on bad news getting out of the country by making people criminally liable for damaging the nation's reputation or economy.

wonder what is going to happen to all their zany construction projects now.

They will all finish, the skyscrapers that are currently being built.

What might not finish are the projects on those man-made islands. Dubai sold the land to private foreign companies. They could do whatever they wanted with that land.

As it stands now everything underway will be finished and almost everything that has not broken ground has been shelved.

From the article, "Dubai throws debtors in the pokey, and if you lose your job, they yank your visa; two good reasons to drive to the airport and leave your maxed out credit cards on the passenger seat with an "I'm sorry" note."..Imagine how many of the flights out were charged to those same cards...oh the irony..

Isn't that the same for visa holders for any other country. Here if you lose your job and if you're on an H1B visa, you have to go back.

Quite possibly...

Interestingly enough, they recently restarted construction on it.
did you see this part of the entry?
The original building plans called for a structural steel internal frame, a standard requirement for any building that large. The government was unwilling or unable to supply enough steel, and instead insisted the structure be constructed entirely from reinforced concrete in order to save money. The concrete used was also a poor-quality domestic variety, mixed with cheap ingredients in order to meet the cost requirements.
nice to see chinese quality doesn't only come from chinese...
*ducks*

It does boggle my mind that on one hand many of the architectures of the phenomenal growth in the UAE had to be very smart and talented people yet on the other hand they were so committed to spending money on lavish projects they should have known they could not ride the gravy train forever. Nobody at all should be shocked that people would be fleeing as money started to dry up.

Debtor's prison in the Middle East? Yeah, fuck that. . .
