Over 10 years already since I got a 1GHz Tbird from Compuwiz1...

I remember those. I was working in a computer parts/repair shop and many people used to crack the exposed dies on those durons and tbirds putting on the heatsink. People hate when you tell them there is no refund for physical damage.

That was around the time that people would buy the wrong voltage agp cards too.

I remember Slot A CPUs. They're like freaking Nintendo cartridges.

I had a Pentium II Slot 1 at the time. Awesomely absurd design choice. Not sure why they had to separate everything. Though I suppose there was no possible way to f--- up installation. :|

Had a Socket A Duron 950 shortly after that.

I had one of the awesome P3 450s in Slot 1. Back then wasn't the L2 cache in SRAM on the cpu board?

I remember sweating buckets when I first overclocked that thing to 504 MHz. Couldn't get it to 600 cause the mobo I had didn't let me up the voltage.

Goodtimes.

Back then wasn't the L2 cache in SRAM on the cpu board?

Yep, it was called 'closely coupled' L2 cache. Manufacturing process at the time didn't allow any significant quantities of cache to be on die without making the chip prohibitively expensive, and hi speed SRAM chips were just as expensive. The Intel SRAM chips ran at 1/2 the core clock. The AMD chips could be 1/2, 2/3, or 2/5s depending on the model.

/history lesson.

LoL! I remember too and am amazed at how far tech has come, lying on my sofa typing this post on a device not much bigger than that CPU

I miss Lola 🙁

I'm not sure what your context is here, but iamwiz82 and compuwiz1 aren't the same people

Also, I joined AT shortly after that conversation took place because I was having issues getting my KT7A-RAID Mobo working properly and found out the CPU fan plugs were switched and it wouldn't boot because it registered no CPU fan hooked up. Good times!

I remember the Celeron 300a's overclocked to 450. Man those were the days.

I had mine overclocked to 504 (112 Mhz) stable with only bumping the voltage a bit and a couple of extra case fans 😀

I believe I ended up taking it down a notch to 496 (110 Mhz), which is stable with stock voltage, and gave the computer to my mom. She used it for about 3-4 years until it finally died.

I just gotta AXIA y'all a question!
Do you remember those JonnyGuru rants when he worked at twco.com?
People chipped dies, did not remove plastic under those Taisol sinks, FOP-38s, Hedgehogs (all copper socket 462) (but I liked my PEP66 better). Those 7000 RPM Deltas were L-O-U-D, yo!

My 0.9Ghz Thunderbird served me well for almost 10 years. Can't believe I waited that long to upgrade.

900mhz TBird -> Core2Duo Quad 3.0Ghz

And ya, my phone is more powerful than my old TBird (well maybe not quite when you figure in the Radeon 9600Pro 256MB)... technology is amazing.

I have a T-Bird 1100mhz from Feb 2001 its in my drawer next to my desk.

I have my Opteron from 2006 still running and a Venice 3000+ that I just put away last weekend after finishing up my NAS testing. I will be replacing the Venice with a Z68+i3 system soon.

Yeah, I remember when sellers like Steve were given somewhat tacit approval to sell on this site then they came down on them and Steve opened compuwiz1.

Bought a tbird 1.3ghz from him 12/30/2000...can't believe it was that long ago...

In July of 2001 I got the 1 Ghz Thunderbird. I wasn't willing to pay more for a faster CPU, but I wanted my first Ghz processor. I mated it with an Abit KT7A KT133A. It took 4 years for the caps to start blowing.

Since i had never heard of forums to ask what was best at the time i went to PC world and got a socket 423 pentium 4 with 1.7 jiggahurts of power, it was clearly much faster than the green arrow comp next to it that was only 1.4 jiggahurts.

Advent 3604 with 850 garibaldi chipset not the smartest purchase in the world :\
