I am looking for a laptop. I dont want to get one where I call 1/2 way around the world for a job my friend should have.

Who outsourced tech support?

Frankly I wouldn't give a rats ass if some indian was doing tech support as long as I have a working machine that will be fixed when something goes wrong. Welcome to the world of global capitalism... if you don't like it, move to North Korea or Cuba :frown:


... oh but don't try to get your local built laptop fixed from there.

Sounds great. I'll be sure to let one of the managers know where I work. Seeing as she recently had several run ins with Dell tech support and each asked her to change jumper settings on the motherboard...... on a laptop.

Apparantly they refused to skip this part of the "procedure" and get to the RMA.

She would have voided her warranty faster than you can say Bangalore.

yup thats right go local there are some good shops not every local is an idiot, and i will tell ya what the problem with global outsourcing it kills american jobs. surly we have the skills we need at home. our shining global capitolists are just a bunch of greedy corp guys that as long as they make bonus who cares who gets layed off. is that reason to tell someone to mave to korea no i dont think so.

why don't you buy a dell with "premium support", and give the $500 you still save to your friend?
 
I work at a local computer store. We build laptops, have local tech support you can UNDERSTAND, and have reasonable prices. If your laptop is broken you can drive down the road and drop it off to be fixed (free while under warranty). That's better than taking weeks to ship it somewhere, wait while they fix it, and wait more while it is shipped back. (I guess you don't *always* have to ship Dells somewhere, but often you do).


EDIT: A LOT of customers agree with this reasoning and it's part of why the store I work at does so well. They've experienced crappy tech support from India.

"I plugged the ethernet cable to the back of my hard drive and everything looks fine, but now I can't get my email."

Damn that. It'll take another year or two, but the money company's save buying products with Indian tech support WILL be allocated to higher end domestic computer jobs.

I'm not joking. If you want to do tech support move to India. Exotic locale, plenty of tech support jobs especially for fluent English speakers. Your meager bank account will set you up nicely. Or, if you prefer a manufacturing job smashing your fingers putting the side panels on cars, then try Mexico. Same thing. Exotic locale, great exchange rate, plenty of menial manufaturing jobs. Or stay here and grab a nice R&D or Networking job when they pop up...or...*gasp*...maybe look at a field OUTSIDE of computers. There, I said it. Most people look towards Computer jobs for the high pay...not stopping to think maybe competition would lower income levels as colleges began graduating CSC majors by the 100's of thousands a semester.

WTF!!!!!!

but seriously, if you need a laptop and want good support dell is it, they cut back their outsourcing, and have a LOT more U.S. support, i think they may have even cut their outsourcing. Also, if you know you need an rma, anything they ask you to do tell them you tried, trust me it works.
