Sorry guys, but globalization works for whoever can compete the best. For decades North America has benefitted from our high concentration of skilled, efficient workers making a decent amount of pay. Now that other countries are starting to get competitive the idea is all wrong? Very hypocritical.

To the moron who said to vote John Kerry, do you honestly think the President has that much control over private businesses?

I agree with you....and yes the guy with the Kerry response is a complete fool of the "union" labor mindset which actually contributes to the problem.

We Canadians have dealt with a miniaturized form of globalization for years, living next door to our southern neighbours and all. Legistlation to keep companies "inside" the country can work, but you do NOT want it to. The other Canadians can attest to the mess it's created - big business that needs not to worry about competition from abroad. That leads to corporate laziness, lack of innovation and an eventual spiral into bankruptcy.

If you're going to use a capitalist system, you gotta compete on the world stage. I suggest we all stop whining and instead try to figure out how to make ourselves irreplaceable as workers.

A Federal job which required you to be a citizen ought to do the trick.

the worst thing we can do is to enforce regulation on outsourcing of jobs. That will cause our companies and products to be non-competitive pricewise. As soon as forgeign countries gain the technical knowledge, the cheap labor abroad will flood the market with forgeign products priced much lower than our own domestic ones. At that point, no one will have a job.

Its a sad thing that people are losing their jobs. Unfortunately all they can hope for is for the market to correct itself and in the meantime find another line of work.

from fsckedcompany:
Merrill Lynch is cutting 180 IT employees, outsourcing to IBM -- here's the memo that was sent to everyone else...

These jobs are going over seas too.

If you are going to pursue a career that is in a sector of business that is usually considered a COST center rather than a REVENUE center then you need to stop complaining that the jobs are going where the costs are LOWER. If most here had a business degree rather than a CS degree maybe there wouldn't be so much discussion on this topic.

Instead of sitting around complaining and watching the jobs leave maybe you should take the time to acquaint yourself with global market trends and make better decisions about career paths. Just because you want to work in some kind of an IT job doesn't mean the job is going to be there for you so you have two choices, you can either move to where the jobs are, or get the schooling/training to get a job where you are. Stop blaming businesses for doing what they HAVE to do to stay competitive.

Yes I agree with what you state here but I'm sure to the single mom with 2 kids that just lost her customer service job in Missouri or where ever she may be at, it doesn't matter to her what the global marketing trends are.
And the fact that I agree with what you say does not change the realities to all parties either. It is time for people to pull their heads out of the sand and realize the tremendous changes the business world is going through. I understand and sympathize with all that are losing their jobs to cheap overseas labor but I cannot say that I am surprised or that I disagree with a company's choice to do so. In some cases this is going to bite them in the ass and in others it will be a great choice but only time will tell.

I can't speak for other countries that the U.S. is outsourcing to, but India has been outsourcing its brainpower to the U.S. for decades. The IT industry would have been a fraction of what it is today without the brightest of that country coming here. If someone really wants to b*tch, in this case, India can. The Govt. paid (almost entirely) for the engineers great IIT education, and then their engineers migrate to the U.S. and the beneficiary is the U.S. Call personnel get paid what, 8, 9 bucks an hour tops? The jobs that companies like Sun Microsystems, Cisco Networks, Juniper Networks, I2 Technologies, and Computer Associates pay far greater than that (all founded or co founded by indian immigrants), and employ more people than are being outsourced. Not to mention the fact that you get your Dell computer for under 400 bucks, then you guys b*tch about customer service being lousy. Well, don't buy a fcking dell next time, make it yourself (from parts that were made in another Asian country no doubt), or buy from a manafacturer that DOESN'T outsource anything (good luck).

Ronstag is completely right. Stop blaming others, that won't improve the situation. We've been outsourcing for years, where were the complaints when little Pakistani kids stitched your soccer balls or dyed your leather goods? Where were the complaints when Chinese made your Nikes? Where were the complaints when the U.S. outsourced jobs to Ireland?

hypocrisies, double standards, and b.s. thats all it is.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. I dont LIKE it, but its life. My fathers manufacturing plant lost alot of business to the Chinese. But, guess what? The Chinese cant do specialty apps like he can or do high quality apps. So, if you want a generic sloppy component go to the Chinese. But if you need high quality and tight tolerances, your best bet is USA or Japan to get the job done. As such, he has changed his business approach. Not because he wanted to, but because he was forced to evolove or die.
Same is happening with our jobs. We evolve or we become extinct.

Goodbye jobs.

I saw on the News yesterday that this list was coming.

I tried to do something like this in the P & N forum area but the AT Economy experts and Bush Loyalists on here swear that moving all these American jobs is the best thing for the Country.

They say that the jobs will be replaced with service jobs like sweeping floors and strocking shelves at Walmart and the wages will be the highest ever.

The president just swore that 2.6 Million of these jobs will be created this year.

You guys don't agree with your fellow AT Economy experts and Rush, Hannity and your President???:Q:)

That may look fine on paper but you honestly believe a Country that can't support itself with anything other than some Corn can survive?

Totally dependent on the goods from the rest of the world?

Putting all your eggs in someone else's basket and giving them the basket too?

The President has the power to stop the flow of benefits of a Company calling itself an merican Company by having it;s Corp seal on paper and a skeleton crew in a skeleton Office Headquarters in the U.S. but having all of it's jobs taking place overseas and still calling itself an "American" Company and claiming Amercian Tax benefits.

Revoke the "American" Corporate Charter of these Companies and make them pay for the priviledge to gain American Consumer dollars as well as pay Taxes at the ports.

This will change their anti-American job attitude in a heartbeat.

And should we take direction from you as to how highly we should think of Indians? Dude, I am Indian and I think I
India is the greatest country in the world and Indians are the smartest people :p I bet Liechtensteinians think the same of themselves too! You've probably never heard of the term 'brain-drain'. For decades, India kept losing its best and brightest to the western countries. You didn't want to lock your borders back then! When I first came to NC, my officemate told me that Indians should go back to India and try to develop their own country. I told him it would happen in time. Guess what? I was right!

That said, I have to be honest! I will be singing an entirely different tune when my own job finally gets outsourced to India  Damn bastages, stealing my job :|

:p ;)

I work for one the hardest hit sectors when it comes to losing job to foreign competitors. I am a unionized auto worker.

But, it is this competition that is forcing us to get our act together. I welcome the challenge.

It hurts me when I hear so many of the foreign fan-boys on this forum dis American cars out of hand, but I understand why. For too long we lagged too far behind. We still aren't where we we need to be, but our reputation haunts us more so than our products deserve.

There is always going to be an suppressed economic country/region that can do the job cheaper. Eventually that country/region will see growth and costs of doing business there will not be as advantageous. How can you deny someone's desire to better themselves.

But that being said, I do tend to try to find products that are made in America before I make a purchase.

It is niether non-American nor biased in any way, it is simply the truth. I don't particularly like it but there is little that I can do to change it. Companies are suffering the effects of not having a long term global strategy. I noticed this trend 12 years ago when I was in graduate school along with the fact that very few of my fellow students even grasped the need or concept of long term strategy. Until US companies stop focusing on short term 6 month strategies to make the balance sheet look good they will continue to flounder and grasp for every trend there is to try and survive.

I don't think anyone has a right to complain. We do it to ourselves because we don't pay attention to where products are made. Every time you buy something made in china/mexico/japan/etc you contribute to the problem. The companies are just trying to lower their costs so they can provide us with lower cost services so they can stay competitive. They wouldn't be doing that if we made it clear that we are willing to pay more for american made, american supported goods.

I think competition is good anyway. Its time for us all to start thinking globally.

The India Institute of Technology universities are really famous for their undergrad work.. did he come from them? If you go to the top universities in the US, the same can happen to you, too.
