Outrage in Stanford Rape Case Over Light Sentence for Attacker and Stmt by His Father

Except that, it's my understanding that he raped no one. He was caught behind a dumpster fingering some drunk girl. Pretty much the same thing that just about every guy here did in high school, most likely in a drive-in movie.

I remember the good old days, when rape used to actually mean a girl was forced to have sex against her will.

She was unconscious and certainly not consenting. It was rape.

I agree that the sex offender registry can be unnecessary in some cases, but I do agree with many types of sexual predators being on the list. Repeat offenders and child predators come to mind immediately.

Thanks for being logical here. When faced with something as heinous as rape, the urge is to demand heads. But that doesn't seem to slow down the alarmingly high rate of sexual violation in our society. And it's also fallacious to think that someone who does something like this would necessarily repeat the offense. That's a difficult thing to picture, but I'd much rather choose punitive intervention that matches the reality of how likely something is to deter future violation than what my emotional reaction wants me to believe.

Good. Turner has carried such a sense of entitlement that he's literally a textbook example of a rapist. I believe people should have a shot at redemption, but that doesn't mean trying to avoid punishment.
I disagree. He's appealing the registration but any competent lawyer would take these steps. We all would as well if there was a decent chance. Really at the end of the day the question to ask is what is the chance that he'll ever criminally sexually assault someone again? Maybe my biases are at play here but I suspect pretty low and I'm generally in favor of giving young people a second chance at life (unlikely society which tends to throw the book at people of color disproportionately)

Ok this is ridiculous. By your assertion then larry nassar should be a free man because all he did was finger pre-teen and teenage girls butts and vagina's secretly.

I think it's fine to appeal the registration; I just don't think it should be shot down.

Is the chance of a repeat low? Probably. But that's only part of the point. Turner got a very light sentence for what he did, and he (plus his parents) has spent most of his time complaining about how this will affect his future prospects than showing any sympathy for the woman he raped. His "apology" pinned his acts on alcohol and party culture and showed no real remorse -- it actually upset his victim.

Atonement is good, but if he's not sincerely sorry for what he did, he shouldn't have a permanent mark lifted off his record. His victim certainly won't get to escape what he did.

It's dangerous to be a man these days..

As I said in another thread..

It's now "Rape" if:..

1. The check bounced.

2. Her husband/boyfriend caught her or found out.

3. She didn't have an orgasm.

4. You looked ugly to her the next morning after the mai tais wore off.

This is the only safe way to have sex these days.

I don't think anything he would have said or done would have satisfied his victim or those seeking his head. Simply put the idea that what he did to his victim was beyond any price a human could possibly pay for retribution/restoration is why he probably has no mechanism of appeasing his enemies.

Usually the only thing that heals these sorts of wounds is time. Enough time passes, people move on and then people start to forgive each other.

Anyway, I don't think anyone truly knows how he personally feels about this whole thing (whether he has empathy for his victim or not). However the extreme negative impact this entire thing has had on him and his family leads me to believe he is at least significantly remorseful regarding the numerous bad and hasty decisions he made that led to all this. I can't imagine anyone doing what he did then having his and his families lives ruined over it and then saying "yeah, it was totally worth it and I would do it again"

@Viper1j

A helpful video for you.

They left out the part where the boyfriend found out they had tea, and they then said I never wanted tea, and he made me drink it. And I am under no obligation to make them "safe". They can leave my house (or dorm room) and take their own chances. I'm not Dudley Doright, and I never played him on tv.,

This is what it's come to.

Neither did most people, including me, but most guys have banged at least one drunk chick in college.

Anyway I give up. Everyone is right, and I am wrong. Females can't grasp complicated concepts like personal responsibility, or handle things like controlling their own destinies.. It just hurts their lady brains too much..

Welcome to ATPN 😀

Well, I can take comfort in knowing that neither of my daughters would ever end up passed out behind a dumpster. I'd like to think I raise reasonably responsible, and intelligent young women.

And it's not my responsibility, nor do I have any obligation to save the airheads of the world.

I have only so much sympathy to go around.

I think I'll save it for the children they got molested while they were sober, and the young teens that got pregnant through rape, and are faced with the terrifying decision of whether or not to raise the product or get an abortion, and the battered wives all over this country.

Rather than some drunk at a frat party.

Yeah I’m gonna disagree with ya there. Being drunk and passed out doesn’t make you fair game. Being drunk, agreeing to frick, then regretting it in the morn and calling rape is bs. That’s not what happened here.

Not so much "fair game".. But people who stretch out there necks, while handing out straight razors, forfeit their rights to whine about bleeding.

As I said, if I have a finite amount of sympathy, I'll save it for those that truly deserve it.

Ah, the "she was drunk, so it's her fault" crap. Let me guess, you also think a woman was "asking for it" if she was wearing revealing clothing?

Stop blaming the victim. Turner is the only one guilty here.

Rape, assault, etc? No. But a woman can’t wear a shirt with their breasts hanging out and then pull a "uh my eyes are up here, asshole!" either though. Wearing revealing clothing is asking to be looked at sexually, yes.

By the way, this is a fairly questionable blanket assumption because someone could dose your daughter's drink with roofies or the like when she is not looking. According to your apparent "logic," as long as the perpetrator could make a reasonable argument that they were not involved with dosing the drink and merely took advantage of the situation, they could avoid any serious consequences for their action. (This is without even going into the degree of victim blaming going on with the statement.)

Or how about just don't have sex with a passed out drunk girl? Seems pretty simple to me.

You're right to a large extent, but the point is that you don't act on that beyond a casual glance unless you've been invited to do so. Don't leer (i.e. stare intentionally), don't catcall, and certainly don't touch.

They probably already have and you just don't know about it.

I’ve never in my life heard anyone catcall someone. It must be a big city thing. Touch is definitely a no-no, but if their breasts are hanging out or their skirt barely covers their ass there’s not a time limit on how long someone can look. It’s been worn to display their body in a sexually suggestive manner, so when people oggle that’s just par for he course. Continuous staring is creepy no matter what they’re wearing but skimpy outfits are deliberately inviting so I can’t fault anyone for looking.

They don't need your sympathy, people just don't need your attempts to make yourself feel worldly wise by seeking to find a reason to blame them in varying degrees for the situation they find themselves in.

Heaven forbid that your daughters might do anything that's to be expected of young adults growing up and put themselves in a situation that they're not fully in control of. Maybe you should lock them in their bedrooms? That should help them become sufficiently worldly wise, don't you think?
