Outpost: Maxtor 200GB Internal Hard Drive - $89.99

excellent find, but i am trying to decide on putting the drives in with the 5 yr warrenty, next go around in my pc, prices keep falling on these hard drives, makes me not want to buy another one till day after thanksgiving

I haven't had good experiences with Maxtor, I'll stick to WD and Seagate. Good deal for others though.

nice, they took another $10 off from the $99 it's been a for months.

Now, just remember to have Staples PM to this price. Buy 2 of them and then use the $30 off $150 coupon. Should get them for $148+tax+sh. Now if you say there is a Fry's nearby and can pick it up from there.. then you can get the shipping for free. I've done this before a couple of months ago when they had it for $89 for a day.

Me neither. Just got one back from RMA - this makes two that failed within a year...

Yeah, I figure they're giving these Maxtors away as they're crap. Out of 5-6 of the ATA133/7200rpm/80Gb/8Mb drive's I've bought over the past 2 years, 3 have died with the click of death within a year.

I'm looking for some 80Gb ATA100 Seagates to replace them.....

these are absolutely failure prone drives

this is the crappy model series Dell puts in its GX150's (the SFF workstations that trap heat) that cause me to have to replace the maxtors with seagates and WD's one by one for a client of mine.

they dont care that Dell will service the drive free. what bothers them (the client) is that when Dell services the computer, they put a Maxtor back in, and it dies within months just like the originals. the half dozen systems i've put Seagates into haven't had problems for nearly a year, and probably wont (i'd use WD's too, they are great at dealing with heat, i have one in my xbox and that thing has a case temp of like 50celcius!)

this isnt' worth losing your data over. spend 20 bucks more and get something decent. this is like buying a camaro over a corvette. spend a little more, get a lot more.

I've been using a Maxtor Ultra 160GB 8MB Cache drive for over a year without any problems. My pc is on practically 24/7. I bought this one for extra storage. What kills me is that my WD drive died on me after only 6 months yet my friends Maxtor died on him within a month and his WD drive is still going strong. I'm beginning to wonder about the quality control on all of them.

i'll stick with seagate even though it might be alittle more expensive

5yr warranty > 1yr

edit- but still a nice find 🙂

I saw the same drive on sale at Staples for $99 earlier this week. They usually take competitors coupons so you may be able to get it even cheaper. Not only that, but the one I bought there (Staples) a few weeks ago came with an IDE PCI ATA133 card - it had a big yellow sticker on the outside of the box stating so. YMMV as usual.

yea, you can raid anything as long as the sizes aren't too different (<2% difference), but man, puting a maxtor in stripe with something is asking for a failure. all that needs to die is one drive to loose everything.

"buying a maxtor is a lot like voting for george bush, you never know how reliable they are until its too late."

very well said!!

I think it's also important to note where you bought your drives. I bought 7 drives from Dell last year which was a mix of 3 Seagates, 3 Maxtors and a WD. All were 120GB 8MB cache drives. One of the Maxtors arrived DOA, and had a replacement within 3 days in a relatively painless RMA process. The WD died on the 30th day and that RMA took a bit more effort. The remaining two Maxtors died around the end of their one year warranty and only one Seagate died about 9 months later, but that was due to some accidental geographical relocations of the system with the power switch in the on position. So, after about 18 months, all three Maxtors have been replaced under warranty, one from Dell, two from Maxtor, one Seagate from Seagate, and one WD from Dell.

I picked up some similar drives around the same time from Newegg and ZipZoomFly and those ares still running without any problems. The last drives I purchased from Outpost were 3 x WD 120GB AB which are still running fine in their third year. So this deal doesn't look too bad if I buy multiple drives for a RAID5 Array.

I attribute those drive problems to Dell and have decided not to buy drives from Dell again...
although, the 25% off drives this week looks mighty tempting...
120GB Seagate ST3120022A for <70$...
8 x 120GB ~$520
mighty tempting for a new ogg server
