Dammit, why did you have to point this out. ;)

I don't need the PC card, but I'll take the router.

hope it works, the rebates says it's a fry rebate, even though they are one in the same now (outpost and frys) i know people love to not send rebate checks :)

tempting, i love my SMC (wired) router.

I don't see how that could be an issue as outpost is clearly advertising that there is a rebate.

i set up a dlink system for my dad, wish i could have waited and saved him a little $$

now i think i'll get one myself...... merry christmas to me :)

use blue, and PM the $174 in 2 months when it is $130ish :)

as a side note, i ordered one of these from staples b4, and it came DOA. (Staples.com does carry these, as an IM#, and will PM outpost, but i doubt they have the same rebate).

Your wish is my command. Title changed to reflect the awesomeness of the router deal.

Until I fried it last week I was using the wired version of this router and I can vouch for it's greatness. Supports almost every feature you could need, including "mac clonning" which I understand will make it work better with comcasts new network.

Only thing I wish it had:

Over voltage protection.

I accidently plugged in an adapter for a 3com product (that fit perfectly) by mistake and fed it 12V instead of it's normal 5V. Should have worked at least twice as fast right? Of course I blame it all on comcast. Only reason the 3Com Lan modem was in use was because my rented cable modem is broke and comcast refuses to replace it until the great transition (jan 6th only 350+ hours of downtime!).

Two questions:
Anyone using this router with non SMC cards????? Esp interested in using the "gold" ORiNOCO PCCARD ($100 or so).

Details state: 64-bit or 128-bit Encryption for wireless LAN security

So it should work swell with the "gold" card????

I've been using one of these with a couple of orinoco silver cards for a few months to share cable internet access among 3 pc's. Other than the fact that the network printer thingy wouldn't work with my particular printer, the SMC has worked flawlessly. Great wireless router at a fantastic price.

The Orinoco Gold should work swell.

If you aren't particularly interested in the encryption leve, get the orinoco silver. A guy on ebay has a bunch of these (new) listed at a $70 buy it now price. I think I read that the SMC does slow down signficantly if you turn on encryption.

I'm using an SMC Access Point with a Dell TrueMobile card and it's great. The card is the Dell branded version of the Orinoco Gold and supports WEP 128. You can get it for $80 delivered right now through the Dell Home and Home Office web site. I originally had an SMC card but the degradation with WEP enabled got to me.

Is SMC running this rebate or is it through Outpost? I'd like to know because I might be able to find it cheaper yet and with the rebate, it would be excellent!

The form specifically says Fry's (aka Outpost). This will probably turn out to be another rotating rebate valid at different vendors each week the way SMC did last summer with the regular router. If you have an Amex blue cardcan find the router for less, your best bet would be to get it from CompUSA or Outpost and submit a best value guarantee claim.

Thanks for the info on the "gold" card!!!

For some reason I think it is odd that a mixed solution would work better than an all SMC solution, but an extra $20 for a speedy WEP 128 solution would be great.

Anyone using a similar setup with 2.4Ghz cordless phones? Do you loose all internet access when on the phone or do thing just slow down?

Does the dell card come with the same software as the genuine Orinico?

With cheapest shipping, it would be $133, I have to pay $12 for tax, not hot. I could pick up the linksys from dell home for $135 AR.

SMC rebates sucks. I wait for more than 3 months before the phone message said "rebate has been paid", then I wait another 6 weeks (MS or Staples will have enough time to process 3 round of rebates) to get the check. But $35.5 final cost for 4-port router is not bad.

No tax here.

Shipping is only $6.70 reasonable.

The dell/linksys deal from the bus site for $115 looks VERY tempting but I already have the wired version of the SMC and it works swell with my cable provider and every application I use.

Also, you are comparing apples ot oranges: The Linksys with the rebate does not have a built in print server. I'll pay an extra $15 for a print server any day of the week.

The Linksys with the printserver is still a very good price at dell, but it is out of stock.

Can the router actually pull down and send at 11Mbps? I need something that will do 10 for sure. Will this work?

Looks like they lowered the price by $5. I think I might cancel my Linksys wireless from Dell and pick this up after their exceptional tech support.

If you check the reviews at PracticallyNetworked, you'll see that cards with the Lucent chipset consistently outperform those with Intersil chips -- both with respect to range and WEP performance. There are variations among the Intersil cards (LinkSys cards are awful) and I think the SMC are among the better ones, but the Lucent cards are better than all of the Intersil ones. The APs don't seem to be affected as much, you can use a Lucent card with just about any AP and get good results.

«Does the dell card come with the same software as the genuine Orinico?»

The Dell card comes with it's own version of the Orinoco drivers and manager. Unfortunately, the standard Orinoco fies will not recognize the card, you have to depend on Dell to update the files. Someone posted a patch in one of the Dell forums a few days ago that he said would make the files usable but I haven't tried it because I'm happy with things as they are. I get good performance everywhere I need to go.

LuNoTiCK: Can the router actually pull down and send at 11Mbps?

11mps is the 802.11b standard and all the equipment I've worked with works to that. Whether you get it at the workstation depends on the card and the ambient obstacles. If you know you will be in a less than optimal environment, I'd recommend getting a card with Lucent chips (e.g. Orinoco, Dell, HP, etc.)

muffstah: Does anyone know if you can pick these up at the store?

The price at So. California Fry's today is $199.99 -- it may be featured in tomorrow's ad but I wouldn't bank on it.
