Seems to look good to me. I just wish it was the 440 and not the 420.
This one has SDRAM, not DDR.
Also, the outpost/frys rebates for me so far have been quite good.

You sure about that? A GF4MX420 came with one of my dells...It had DDR memory on it...Still wasn't gameable worthy though :(

This is an EXCELLENT price on a good value oriented card. The card isn't meant to be a super high 3D graphics performer. For example it does Direct X 8, but it does it by offloading it to the CPU of the PC. It's more for the office, but I suspect it will handle some games OK at low res. There are GF3 Ti ?00 cards that will outperform this one in 3D, but they are going to cost you more. NVIDIA specifically ripped out hardware 3D things like pixel shading from the GF4 MX line to keep prices down. Do not confuse the GF4 MX line with the GF4 Ti line which is made for 3D performance. The GF4 MX cards are more like very fast versions of GF2 MX cards. There was only a GF3 Ti line no MX GF3s.

Again this is a good price on a value/mainstream card.

PNY is a good quality designer/manufacturer. Two things I picked up from USENET recently -- PNY has outsourced the manufacturing of all their video cards to MSI who has an excellent reputation -- phone tech support for PNY is very difficult to get through to, crazy long wait times, like they want you to go away.

For performance reviews of the 3D properties of this card including frame rates achievable on many popular games search around on this web site or one of these others: tomshardware.com , hothardware.com , sharkyextreme.com and hardocp.com .

If you don't see a 420 MX listed use the performance of the 440 MX as a guide and scale back somewhat. I've searched around a bit and performance reviews of the 420 MX cards seem a little tough to come by. Certainly if the frame rates listed for the 440 MX cards aren't sufficient for you then the 420 MX is not the GPU for you.

These links might be helpfull in showing what sort of performance is achievable with the GF4 MX line, but they're generally more about the 440 MX which is the more popular GPU.

I hope these links are OK with the mods. If the links are not OK please, mods, feel free to chop out the links section and leave some note like [[LINKS CHOPPED]].

One more thing ... I noticed while surfing that compuvest1.com has a GF4 420 MX (no name?) card for $39 no rebate. The feedback that had been left about them wasn't too good however. ... but that is no rebate ... The pictured card at compuvest1.com had a fan. I'm pretty sure the GF4 MX cards from PNY have a good heatsink, but no fan.

EDIT IN = I'm really not sure if I should leave the info about compuvest1.com in or not. Certainly read the very nasty things people at resellerratings.com have to say (show one thing ship something else) before considering them as a seller. Search on compuvest.

This is probably way more than you wanted to know ...

Good luck.
