When I said I dont have anti-virus software installed, I wasn't lying. ;)

And I believe you.

So how could anti-virus software be blocking it?

Jesus Christ, this thread is one big fsckup.

Am I saying that the antivirus is your problem? No. I told you that it's an option. I got irritated that you posted in the wrong forum, and you got irritated that you got called on it; I got irritated when people were telling me that I'm wrong (or saying that it's a firewall problem
rolleye.gif
), and other people got irritated that I didn't qualify more clearly that this COULD be a solution, not THE solution.

Semantics.:)

Now I won't even bother explaining.

There's really about 4 ways you can have attachments blocked -

1. At the firewall level(assuming you are corporate). The firewall monitors all inbound stuff and can be told to look for specific things and block it there.

2. Email Server/Gateway level. Basically a program running on the mail server sniffing all inbound and outbound mail traffic. It can look for virus signatures and delete things it doesn't like, it can look for specific attachment types, and delete things it doesn't like, or it can delete attachments based upon keywords (IE: Melissa, I love you, Annak, Kornikova, ect). This can be run on corporate exchange server, or, more recently, I've even seen ISP's starting to take action and installing stuff on their mail servers blocking attachments and viruses on their end before it gets to a subscriber.

3. Third party software installed on end user machine - personal firewall, virus scanner, norton internet security, ect.

4. Block it from the mail program itself. The program will just not display the attachment and will not allow the user to see/run it.

If anything before the computer blocks the attachment, the email itself wouldn't come through. If a firewall or email server blocked the attachment, the enduser wouldn't get the email at all.

Either that or the user would get the email with no attachment at all. The firewall doesn't pass on an attachment that it blocks saying "okay, outlook, block this when you get it"

That's strange. I went to that forum, and it was just a bunch of moralist Christian twenty-something guys talking about how bad their PMS was.

True.... this is why when I happened to me the first time, I emailed back, and suggested he create a copy, rename it to file.txt, and resend it to me.

Been aware of it ever since.... I was pissed at first, but it has saved me alot in other ways.... so I conformed.

As much as people LOVE to target MS and thier software, they HAD to lock it down....

If you really have no AV on your PC, it would be a disaster if you got a bad virus.... and this is why they did it.

I suggest AVG

Good luck :)

I hate when people type in bold letters WRONG FORUM

You are not the mod... more people read OT.. if he was in software forum he would have MAYBE 1 response by now.. give the guy a break. there is NO point in wasting your time typing out that it's the wrong forum.. just makes you look "mean"

Then why is it that the mods frown on it? Why do they even move threads then? Hell, let's get rid of all the other forums and have one giant off topic!!!!

The only thing I did is post. Some people don't realize that they're in the wrong forum (how, I don't know). Others do it on purpose. I dunno if it's a rule or something, but there's a reason that the software forum exists. Don't be a dick. Use it. When you don't, don't be surprised when someone simply reminds you that you've made a mistake.

No mods frowned on this post at least, if they did, they didnt mention it here.

BTW, I posted this same problem in the software forum about 2-3 weeks ago and aside from my bumping it, i think i had 1 reply that didnt answer my question. Obviously he got his fix here. Good for him!!

I still havent been able to figure out how to fix it on office 2k..

Don't be a dick.
The pot called the kettle what?

That's the problem, you didn't "simply remind", bold/cap letters don't express things simply - they do so rudely and make the poster look like a dick when it's not needed.

my .02, this thread is OT enough.

Did I PM the mods with a link to the thread asking to have the thread moved?
Did I post in Forum Issues?
Did I email the mods?

No. I posted in the thread. That's a simple reminder.
