outlook: sort by "new"

you know how outlook shows "new" emails in bold, and also shows a count of how many "new" emails are in a folder?

normally I would tell a user to simply sort by Received time stamp to find his new emails. but lets say his emails are not really new

say I have a user who has let some "new" e-mails slip by into the distant past. he now has a huge inbox of email and somewhere lots in that email are several "new" bolded e-mails that are no longer actually new

but he wants his counter to go down to 0. aside from manually scrolling through the list of e-mails, there must be an easy way to quickly bring up only the "new" emails in outlook

The menu options are slightly different depending on the version of Outlook. In Outlook 2003, click on the View menu, point at Arrange By, then point at Current View, and click on Unread Messages in This Folder. This will tell Outlook to only show messages that have not been read yet.

When he is done, select the Messages option from that menu to tell Outlook to show all messages again.

What version of Outlook are you talking about? If it's OL2003 or 2007, there's a built-in "search" folder that displays all unread messages, arranged any way you like. The "Simple Mail Handler" from the old Exchange Resource Kit will do the same thing for older versions; as will a couple of other add-ins.
