outlook hangs on startup for 15 minutes

Hi guys.

I just started a new Desktop Support Job.

Anyways, one staff member, when she opens Outlook, it hangs for 15 minutes before it actually opens (after putting the exchange password in, it goes to the screen where you can see the edges, but evreything is white).

Now, she has a few .pst files and they are a total of 8gb. Could this be the problem?

I also noticed that it seems to be constantly connecting/reconnecting to the exchange server.

Also.. I will have to talk to the other IT guy, but what was happening originally was apparently Outlook was taking a long time to do anything. She would type and it would take a minute to display text. Im finding out from the other IT technician what it was that he did as this might give a clue as to the problem.

Outlook then asks to open in safe mode the next time you open

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Edit: Just found out, the following was done to try rectify the problem:

1. Upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007

2. Ran Microsoft Update

3. Ran scanpst.exe to repair PST files

4. Ran scanost.exe to repair OST file

Well, that could be a couple of things. I don't have any direct experience with Exchange, however you did mention a few things that could have something to do with it.

First, 8gb of PST files, how many PST files and how large are they? The larger they are, the slower things run.

Secondly, does she have any plugins running in Outlook? If one of them is misconfigured, it can really wreak havoc with the startup time.

Thirdly, you mentioned that it was constantly disconnecting and reconnecting to the server. Is there a problem with the network between the computer and the exchange server?

Thanks for the replies.

Im starting to think maybe its a plugin. I dont believe their is any connection problem with the PC thats causing outlook to hang.

Will run in safe mode, disable plugins and see what happens.
