Should I or not? What does it do? Do I loose emails? Can i retrieve them?

You should let OE go ahead and compact files. You won't lose emails; you can still retrieve them.

I compact when prompted to do so and nothing bad has happened. I notice the copies (originals?) of the folders in the trash bin after it completes and I just delete them. Here is a link.
