Outlook express question

I have just completed a reformat and reinstall of Win XP Pro, after saving the folders and messages from outlook express. I am not able to import the files/folders, nor am I able to copy them to the outlook express folder. Outlook express (and outlook, for that matter) do not seem to be able to open these files. Any suggestion to what I can do to read these files? Thanks in advance.
