I have a fair bit of knowledge about computers and software but I have found a problem that just doesn't make any sense.

The other night while gaming my computer crashed (actually the first time this has ever happened) anyway it kicked me out of the server and when I got back to the desktop everything was locked up hard. So I restarted and everything seemed to be ok but the system was still not quite right Norton antivirus wouldn't work and caused some general protection fault. So I removed Norton restarted and then outlook express won't open correctly it will open and work but it takes it forever (45 seconds or so).

I installed Windows overtop of the existing install hoping that whatever files got screwed up would be fixed but I still have the same problem. I am running windows ME do any of you experts have any ideas on what this is??

All other things on the computer appear to be working just fine.

Since you are running Windows ME, I would have tried system restore before reinstalling. That probably would have worked. Might be too late to do now, see if you have any restore points prior to when the problem ocurred.

I did save the system files before installing the new version of ME. I could uninstall windows (it gives this option in remove and add programs) and the use a restore point.

I don't know how to get a system restore though any tips??

Oh and I am sorry if this is in the wrong forum! Didn't see the technical one until after I posted it.

Yea, I find it annoying when mods tell you your thread is in the wrong forum, this looks right to me anyway.

I know WinME uses system restore, though I am familiar with WinXP.

In WinXP, you get to system restore by going to Start/Help and Support/System restore/Restore my computer to an earlier time

That sounds right I am going to see if I can get back to my previous windows install.

No one jumped on me about putting my thread here I just remember from when I was around that some people are a bit touchy.

I will let you know what happens in a little bit as long as I don't end up with a format c::)

Thanks for your help.

Yea, was afraid of that. That's the risk you take when you try to reinstall the OS on top of itself to fix a problem.

While you're at it, any chance you can get and install WinXp? Odds are you won't have these problems.

WinME is widely regarded as the most problematic of all the windows operating systems.

Actually I do have access to XP but I don't care for the way it works if you know what I mean.

I really like the interface of ME I know it inside and out. I am looking into getting some bigger HDDs and at that time I may make the jump but for now I will stay with my tried and true ME.

This is a 2 year old install that just got f'ed up so I think that is decent.

Yea, doesn't seem to make sense that anything would still act up.

I wasn't going to harp on it before, but I really think you would be happy with XP.
In terms of being comfortable with the interface on ME, you can customize XP to operate similarly.

Just to let you know I had the chernobyl virus. I don't know have any idea how it made it to my hdd but it did. I had norton running on my email and I always check everything I download.

Can you get a virus from a game server?? This is when the big crash happened while I was playing a game.

Oh well I found the problem anyway. I only had 100 instances of it on my computer:)

Glad that you got things working for you.

A virus should not have made it through a format though...

It didn't make it through the format but it did live in one of my other partitions:(

I figured it out last night while trying to install norton and it kept finding all these viruses:)

I reformatted and now I am all clean and everything is perfect (less somemore software and such I have to install)

I don't know if I will actually complete installing all of my software as I have been contemplating a hardrive upgrade.
