Okay, so I have little interaction with my boss. He had an old old XP system and it really sh*t the bed this morning. Black screen of death. Doesn't know his admin password. Etc. etc.

He went ahead and bought a new computer and said "Son, get me up and running", but Lord help me in helping him get access to his email.

He has an Earthlink account. When I did see him access his email it did NOT look like he was using the classic Outlook Express program that came with Office.

It looked like he was accessing Outlook Express via Internet Explorer. I could be wrong, but that is how it looked. He even had what appeared to be an IE icon shortcut for email on his desktop.

Now I am really clueless after researching on what to do.

The boss-man is having a conniption that Earthlink's webmail looks nothing like what he is used to. He's 74 and set in his ways.

I'd like to help the man, but don't know how.

The new system runs Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell installed (by yours truly, of course).

Advice?

The icon can easily be changed, but my best guest is that it was Outlook Express that came with WinXP

Unfortunately Outlook Express when the way of the dodo with Vista
It was sorta around still as windows live mail. There is nothing close to it except for maybe thunderbird in the looks department, even then its not the same as OE

Not sure how readable the old hard drive is but if you can hook it up to a system, your/his new one, you can browse it and look for the shortcut to see what it was pointing at.

If it was the Earthlink webmail, maybe there is an option/theme that has to be changed after logging in

I used Outlook Express for ten years and it never looked like what he was using. But I did see OUTLOOK EXPRESS on the banner. It was sort of the same.

Windows Live Mail? Is that something he could use in conjunction with his earthlink.net email account?

I would look in the Documents and Settings\user name\desktop folder when backing up his data and see what the shortcut points to. Should give you a good idea of what he was using.

Advice?

i had a customer that had an email client from earthlink, that was a couple years ago, i had to hunt it down to download an old version and get it working in windows 7.

it was nothing special, just what she was used to.

maybe it was total access? or mailbox?

anyways, good luck. i am fortunate now in that we even make the oldest people at work use windows 8. /backups
