Outlook Express Message Import

I'm working on a unique problem...
A client backed up his Outlook Express data files - by copying over the raw files (i.e. inbox.mbx). Outlook Express won't open them or import them, however. I looked, and realized that the backed up files have .mbx extensions instead of .dbx. He was using the same version of Outlook Express - 5.5. Can anyone think of any way around this problem?

Did your client rename the files himself? Exactly, how did he get the .mbx extension?

I know with raw Outlook Express files, you can just drag them into the Windows/Application Data/Idenitities/{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX/Microsoft/Outlook Express directory and overwrite the existing files.

What happened when you renamed them to .dbx and put them in this directory?

I copied the files from the CD to c:\mail. I made sure that they were not read only, corrected the name, and then I told outlook express to change the mail store to that directory. It said that there was already a message store there, and to close and re-opened Outlook Express in order to make the changes work. It did not open the files. It just created new ones, with a (1) at the end of the file name. Then I tried importing them. It found the file, but said that they were in use or could not be opened.

Still can't figure it out...
