Outlook Express 6 takes far too long to open

I've recently upgraded from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP Professional on my computer.

In Win2k, Outlook Express 5 would would load and be ready in under 2-3 seconds.

In WinXP, Outlook Express 6 takes in excess of 40 seconds to load another 15 seconds to be ready.

What would cause such a large discrepancy between the two versions? I've configured Outlook Express 6 the same way I've configured Outlook Express 5.

My machine specs are as follows:

Pentium IV 1.6A @ 2.0Ghz
Samsung 512MB RDRAM (@500Mhz)
Fujitsu 18 GB @10000 RPM
3Com 10/100 NIC
AT&T Cable internet

I can't think of any other computer specs that would be relevant to how quickly the program will load.

possilbly your virus scanner is doing the real time scanning while the program is being loaded, which creates the lag.. at least that is what happened to me.. real time scan slows down outlook express's loading time on my computer(/w real time scanning enabled, my outlook express takes about 8-15 secs to load).. if i disable the real time scanning, outlook express loads up in 2 to 3 secs.. you might also want to check what other programs you're running in the background which might affect the loading time of outlook express.

Try replacing your existing pstores.exe with one from another xp machine or off the cd somehow.

I had a problem where a virus corrupted the file - same problem, found the solution on google..using windows 98 though so this may not be applicable.

You haven't uninstalled MSN Messenger or disabled the MSN Messenger autostart in Outlook Express by any chance, have you? Doing either will substantially increase the load time for OE6. The way around this is to re-install MSN Messenger on the computer, or to re-enable the Messenger autostart in OE6, and then change the name of the MSN Messenger directory (mine is now "MSN Messenger No Start"). OE6 then cannot start MSN Messenger, but this way does not trigger increased load time. Sure, MSN Messenger is still on your HDD, but it's only 3-4 MBs.
