Outlook Crashes when on the network

hi folks:

please help. I have a Toshiba 3000-S353 laptop running Win98SE.

my laptop is networked to my server at work. The network is NT and we use MS Exchange Server for our email.

I am able to login to my network (when it asks for network login and password) and that's fine.

However, when I try to set up mail using Outlook, i put in the server name ("server") and my login name in the field
and then i click "check name" it crashes. the program totally hangs.

i'm not exactly network savy so please be basic in what the solution might be.

i installed OFFICE 2000 SR1 and installed the MS OUTLOOK onto my laptop.
