Outlook archive files

So we have a few users that keep their archive folders on their own personal network share for backup purposes. The problem is that these archive folders are getting pretty sizable and when they access them over our VPN it causes some issues. I believe it is because the speed of their home broadband is not enough to deal with these larger files and it makes Outlook not so happy.

So does anyone know of a free method of synchronizing archive folders from their hard drives back to their network drives when connected to our network? The problem with some sync methods is that if the large file is at all different is will try to recopy the whole thing which is a waste of our network resources.

I told my boss there are a few programs that we could buy to do this but he wants to hold off on buying something for now...

Not sure if there is a viable free solution but I thought I might ask.

Are you using Exchange and Outlook 2003?
I wonder if the "Use cached Exchange mode" would help you with this...
