So I added my Hotmail account into my Outlook as a new email. when I refresh, however, there are no messages and no new emails are displayed.

how do you get hotmail to sync to be readable through outlook?

Well your lucky... i know for a fact because i just tried it this weekend on outlook 2003 like i have done in the past and i would not get anything. did some reading on the FAQ for msn and it said only paid accounts can do it.

Maybe it depends on your account mine got cancel after 30 of no use and had to reinstated and went back down to 2mb of space instead of 250mb.

Dear MSN Member,

Recently, Hotmail® announced that in order to improve customer experience and reduce spam and junk e-mail abuse on MSN® services,
Hotmail will no longer allow new e-mail accounts to be accessed via Microsoft® Office Outlook® and Outlook Express.

We are pleased to inform you that because you are an existing and valued customer, at this time your current Hotmail and MSN account(s) are exempt from this restriction and you will be able to continue enjoying access to those accounts from Outlook or Outlook Express. However, any new Hotmail or MSN accounts you create will not be accessible via Outlook or Outlook Express.

Because you actively use Outlook or Outlook Express to access one or more of your MSN Hotmail or MSN e-mail accounts, this could be the ideal time to consider subscribing to our powerful new
e-mail service - Microsoft Office Outlook Live.

As an Outlook Live subscriber, not only can you get uninterrupted access to your MSN e-mail accounts from Outlook, but you will also enjoy many other benefits.

EDIT: NO MORE SYNC WITH NEW HOTMAIL ACCOUNTS

Outlook Express is really crappy, i lost a lot of mail due to it crashing and corrupting data.

Gmail:

Free POP access and automatic forwarding
Access your mail the way you want to. Download your messages. Read them offline. Use your Blackberry or Outlook or just the good ol' web. Or forward new messages to an email account you specify. You can even switch to other email services without having to worry about losing access to your messages. Think of it as email portability.

Plus you can bypass your ISP's smtp server and it uses SSL by default on port 465.

I have it synced via Outlook 2003. You just add the new email accounts through Tools>E-Mail Accounts

i used to do this and then when ms changed i was still able to do it for about a month. then I got cut off. then I reformatted my computer (unrelated issue) and when I tried to sync hotmail, voila it worked, and has been working for about 3 months. i shouldn't say anything so i don't junx it (ms is probably crashing my sh!t now) but you might try reinstalling outlook.

It claims that it should work with existing hotmail accounts. I've had my account for years and have been using it with Outlook Express for years. I've just never been able to get it to work with regular Outlook. I have the 2002 version... maybe that's the reason

Thats the key factor...only Outlook Express and Outlook 2003 support Hotmail accounts

I've never been able to figure out how to get outlook to leave my messages on the server if I set it to check my hotmail accounts. Anyone know if this can be done?
