In a rush to get the software released Microsoft decided to forgo the longer beta period for Office 2007 despite the many complaints about bugs in order to release Vista and Office at the same time.

This was a bad idea.

Outlook still suffers from cpu spikes and freezing. It's almost unusable. I would rather they spent the time and finished the software and really polished it up. Instead they pushed it out the door in a half baked state.

I thought it is still in beta version...

Either way, maybe your PC doesnt have enough power? I have been running the beta for about 1 month now on a P4-2.0 with 768mb of RAM and it runs just fine... Its only crashed on me once so far.

I have a Athlon 64 3700 and 1 gig DDR, all the other Office 2007 apps run fine it's just Outlook 2007 and it's the one I use the most. This is definitly buggy behavoir cause it just locks up and the cpu goes to 100% for like 10 seconds.

I thought this final release would fix the problems.

I just uninstalled the beta and installed the MSDN final version. I tried installing the beta three times to fix it but Outlook never got better.

Funny, I've never had that problem. I'm running a 3200 with 2 gigs of memory though.

I just installed a few days ago on my 3200+ with 1 gig of memory and haven't noticed any slowdown. I upgraded from Office 2003 though, so maybe the upgrade from the beta to the final release screwed something up.

Beta runs fine on my crappy P4 2.8ghz/512mb/XP work machine. Search whacks out occasionally though. Want to know what's funny? Runs even better on the crappy P3 1ghz/384mb Vista laptop sitting next to me. I don't get it.

I may definitly look at Thunderbird.

I am a big fan of Thunderbird. We switched my workplace over about a year ago...easy backups, straightforward functionality. It's not without it's problems, but it's much better than Outlook imo. Of course, not everyone can use Thunderbird, especially if you have a PDA or something else that only syncs to Outlook. Also, I am not such a big fan of OpenOffice - it's pretty good, but I prefer to use either Office 97 or XP (vs. 2003 or later). XP is very fast on newer systems and 97 is really fast on anything.
