Outdoorish or photogenic things to do around San Francisco for a week?

I'm going to be around San Fran for a week waiting for tire chains to come in for my trip into Yosemite. What's there to do that's outdoorsy or photogenic?

I really like snorkeling. Is this a good time of year to do so, or is it too cold?

On a side note, can I get good quality tire chains at a brick and mortar shop for about the same price I can get them online, or is online a lot cheaper?
 
Waiting for chains? What? Did you order them online? I gotta think the savings would be small.

There is much to see here. Like Smoochy, I've heard there's a bridge around here somewhere. And lots of redwood trees. And rugged coastline. Tide pools. Islands. Urban whackos. And .... Aw, who am I kidding? There's nothing worth seeing here.

The Pacific is awfully cold.

It is always too cold in San Francisco, and you don't snorkel in SF. It is supposed to rain various parts of next week though.

I was thinking about around Monterey for snorkeling. Looks like I'd need a wetsuit though, and I've never bought one before.

Kelp also scares the crap out of me. I think I'd need to snorkel with someone.

I was going to suggest to just buy the chains at a B&M and just have them as insurance, could always return if you didn't use them. But it definitely looks like its going to snow in the next week. -> If it isn't snowing, you won't need chains. I've been to Yosemite plenty of times in winter. It is a good idea to have them with you though; you technically are required to carry a set while you are in the park during winter.

Academy of Sciences, you're lucky they're finally open
Golden Gate Park, while you're there
The mustards are in bloom, drive to Napa and Sonoma, stop for wine
Drive down the coast, stop to eat in Half Moon Bay or Pescadero, not foggy this time of year
Muir Woods and the Marin headlands
If you want the typical city shots, go up to Twin Peaks or shoot from Treasure Island
Farmer's Market @ Ferry Building on Saturdays
Monterey and Carmel if you have time
Ride across the Golden Gate to Sausalito, take the ferry back
Hog Island Oysters!
Murals in the Mission
Walk through Berkeley, especially on a school day

There's more but that's all I can think of for now 😛

Hrm, my dad had a very hard time returning chains he didn't use to Walmart.

Water is crazy cold. Yes, you'd need a wetsuit. The water is clearer in Monterey, murky up here.

Or hah, visit the nude beaches.
 
When my mom dragged me up there we saw Muir Woods and Mill Valley and stuff.
Also, its still probably way too cold to do all the stuff you want. But that has the benefit of relatively few tourists too.

By the way, when you said "snorkeling" did you actually mean snorkeling, or was that one of your sick euphamisms?
