I've been extremely lazy in the overclocking arena of late.
I got my i7 930 to 4 GHz back in May of 2010, & once i got my overclock dialed in, i basically didn't touch it for the rest of the year.
My new i7 970 arrived in mid-December, but yeah, more laziness.
Finally i got around to installing it yesterday night, & worked on some preliminary overclocking.
It's a really cool chip @ stock! Was only hitting around 55-60C under full load.
Of course, i had to go & ruin that coolness by OCing.
I was hoping for some nice numbers with HT off, but could only do around 4.2 GHZ HT off before voltage/temps were too high, so i've gone back to leaving HT on.
The goods. That last one isn't installed yet...need to run some benches with my HD 5870 so i can compare to the GTX 570 before it goes in.
I still need to fine tune voltages & particularly RAM, but this is from only one night of being installed.
Relevent info:
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R rev 1.0 BIOS F7g
i7 970 batch 3012B113
G.Skill DDR3-2000 Ripjaws (4x2 GB)
Corsair H50
4 GHz - LinX (manually updated binaries) 50 passes
All the main settings are shown in CPU-Z & EasyTune
I've got LLC turned off, so that means lots of vdrop & vdroop.
vcore is set to 1.29375v, but that's ~ 1.248v idle & drops down to 1.216v under load
I may go back to using llc1 as it maintains voltage levels pretty well it seems.
Default CPU pll is 1.8v but i'd seen it suggested that lowering it can help, & i noticed lowering it brings down temps a bit, so i'm trying @ 1.6v as you can see.
QPI/vtt i've got the same as i needed for my i7 930, but i need to see if that can be lowered or not.
Anyway, it's a work in progress, but it's good to be OCing again as it's been a while!
