I got this stuff called Humco alchohol formula 19-190 proof from the drug store, which is 90.5% ethyl alcohol. Would this be safe to clean off old thermal compound?

Good luck with that. Be careful when you put the new thermal greese on there that you cover the whole surface and taht the old stuff is gone. Make sure you get some good stuff. Nothing is easier than frying a processor without thermal greese.

I thought a processor that heats up throttles back just for that reason to avoid getting fryed. I think since P4, all processors have been like that. Is that not correct?

All is well after the install. My cpu temp dropped by ~11*c down to 31*c. So far i am very impressed with my zalman 9500.
