See, this is like therapy. We've rather quickly gotten to the heart of the matter.

It's all about Democrats winning kids!! It's not about the NRA, or the shiny building, or dues paying members, or even guns for that matter.

It's about winning. Of course with complete and total control, it will become about the NRA, the shiny building, dues paying members and guns - ohhh yes, it will be about guns.

The National Rifle Association of America, or NRA, is an American non-partisan, non-profit (501(c)(4)) organization.

You don't have to be a Republican to appreciate and fight to maintain our Bill of Rights.

/thread

Of course the fact that the NRA consistently supports candidates who would abridge every single one of those rights except the 2nd amendment seems to slide right past their membership. I think the NRA serves a great purpose in defending that one right. I just wish they'd support the rest of the Constitution and stop supporting fascist fucks.

I have never received a piece of NRA propaganda that wasn't in some way related to our right to bear arms. I've been a member for over 30 years, I'm not a Republican, and I've never seen a single one.

Can you please provide an example demonstrating otherwise?

Yes, that would actually be fantastic. I'd personally join and contribute to every single one of them.

Really? So if guns aren't the cause it must be the people who own them right?

What do you mean by "gun owner"? Are you lumping everyone who happens to have a gun together?

Generally your average 7-11 robber is not what I would call a "gun owner". True, he has a gun, and uses it, but he's a criminal, not a law abiding gun owner. He likely did not purchase his gun. He's a gun possessor.

I am a gun owner and a frequent gun user, but I have yet to commit a crime, other than speeding.

The NRA is the single force that keeps most gun control from passing in this country. They are GREAT at their lobbying job. They're also an NPO. I've had a lifetime membership since I was 6 years old, and I've given $5,000 a year for the past several years. Sadly I can't really afford to donate that much anymore since I joined the Army.

The NRA is the most powerful lobbying group in the world. Of course they have a nice building.

And there is nothing wrong with people giving money to the NRA, as opposed to say... being required to join the autoworkers union if that is your profession.

Sure we can choose not to have that job, but a job is sort of a necessity and requiring you join a union to work is a lot different than volunteering to give money to an organization that supports a similar belief system.

And if you think other organizations don't have big fancy buildings, you're a moron.

Strangely, gun rights have actually increased (albeit minimally) while the Dems have been in power.

IMO, gun control is to Dems as balancing the budget is to the Pubs. Good rhetoric to get votes from the peanut gallery but the last thing they'd ever actually want to do something about.

Come on Vic, you know better. Who passed the law that banned scary black guns with bayonets?

Are there any other groups I can donate to who will work to stop gun control laws? I know the ACLU has decided that gun rights are not a civil liberty, and they won't defend them.

Honestly, do you know of another group? I detest the NRA's scare tactics, but they are doing what I want them to, defending the rights of the citizens to keep and bear arms. So, I am left with two choices, abandon my support of a liberty that I believe in, or continue to support a liberty that I strongly believe in through a group who uses tactics that I don't support.

Also, the NRA is mostly a supporter of republicans, but until 1970's they supported both parties almost equally. Then, the democrats started passing gun control laws, and after the Democrats started trying to restrict guns, the gun rights association started supporting the other guys. Somehow if the Democrats make "gun control" a part of their party platform, does it really surprise you that the NRA would support the other guys?

Finally, the NRA does still endorse democrats who defend gun rights, which seems to me to be evidence that they put their platform before party. For example:
AR U.S. House 4 Mike Ross Democratic A+
CA U.S. House 43 Joe Baca Democratic A
VA U.S. House 9 Frederick Boucher Democratic A+
WI U.S. House 7 David Ross Obey Democratic B+
MI U.S. House 15 John Dingell Democratic A+

They even support some democrats in those states that you said Democrats could not get support in.

Good. I don't want the people defending my Second Amendment rights working out of a housing project. If you're jealous, please go cry somewhere else.

those of you that for some reason continue to donate money to this dinosaur should be happy to know that you are basically throwing your money away.

I'm happy to know somebody is sticking up for my rights more than you are, and I'm glad to pay my dues towards that end.

It's going towards paying the ungodly amounts of money required to run things out of that building, and the huge staff that apparently works there.

Ungodly? Do you know whether they occupy all the office space? How much it costs to run? New buildings are pretty efficient these days, and real estate holdings are a vital part of any organization's financial holdings. Again, I appreciate that they're well-funded. If you're worried about people spending money, I suggest you take a look at Americans as a whole, or Congress, or the presidents over the last 9 years. Attacking the NRA for having a nice building just proves how much of a fucking tool you are.

Also, got a 'survey' call from the NRA last week - they played a bit of drivel from some schmuck w/the NRA - telling me how, unless I acted now - Hillary Clinton and the United Nations were going to sign a treaty that would ban guns in the United States - I kid you not.

The UN has been pushing weapons laws on member nations for some time - I kid you not.

When the clip was over - the caller asked "do you feel that Hillary Clinton and the UN should decide American gun policies?"

I responed with - "do you really believe that to be the case?" Are you guys really spending money to spread this crap?

The threat may not be imminent, but it's hardly contrived. Creating a crisis to spur action is nothing the NRA has a monopoly on. A democratic congress and administration are doing it to ram healthcare legislation through, and a republican congress and administration did it to ram the Patriot Act through. Don't act so disgusted.

Her response - 'well, you do know that United Nations treaties have no expiration date" - i cut her off - I said 'please tell me you are kidding', but she stayed right on task with more drivel about how Congress if full of anti-gun liberals.

Congress is largely controlled by democrats, who have anti-gun stances. Most major victories for gun advocates have come from the courts, not the legislature.

It really is amazing that people still think the NRA is needed, and they continue to, apparently very well - fund it.

It is very much needed - gun legislation would otherwise go largely unchecked. How long have you lived in America?

It's like most of the auto-unions - it may have served a purpose once, but it's time is long past due.

The NRA has never been more needed than it is now. They are the largest gun advocacy group in the nation, and in light of advancing anti-gun legislation that continues to be bandied about in congress, I'm damned glad somebody is standing up to protect the rights of the citizens.

Now they are just spreading the kind of divisive BS that isn't good for anyone other than their own pockets.

Um, no - there's truth in that. Maybe if you quit being such a pompous dickwad and would actually let them explain things to you or tried to do some research, you'd know better, but instead you're content with being a posting a weak rant about how nice the NRA building is.

for the record - I'm not for banning guns in this country - but I think our rate of gun violence is an absolute black eye on the face of America, and we aren't even trying to fix it, in part because of the NRA and their minions.

Gun legislation has not decreased gun violence in America. Different countries have different results - you can cite countries on either end of the spectrum. The NRA exists to protect rights gauranteed to citizens by the constitution.

Think before you post.

nice generalizations inspire - Democrats by and large are not anti-gun, it's a myth.

Sensible gun legislation does not equal anti gun - but the NRA has brainwashed you to confuse that.

the NRA has never been more needed? Keep on the tin foil hats, they look good on you.

show me one major country that has had the UN enforce anything even remotely anti gun.

you may want to look in the mirror before you toss about terms like pompus dickwad - the chance of any UN/Hilary Clinton created law/treaty having anything at all to do with guns is about the same chance I have to F Jessica Alba tonight.

keep donating your money morons - 5k a year, and now you are in the army? that's solid fiscal management...........

if the NRA didn't exist anymore there would be no major changes to gun laws in the this country, period.

If the NRA didn't exist anymore, the political landscape of this country would change dramatically overnight. New anti-gun bills are introduced every month in the senate, some are fairly radical. The NRA fights the good fight when it's needed and when it's not. When there was no bill to fight, they got us concealed carry in national parks. They'll always working on something for the gun owning public.

And like I said, I have traditionally given $5,000 a year to the NRA, but now that I'm in the Army I may need to reconsider since I'm only netting ~$70k/yr.

thanks Skins!

There it is Nebor - the classic NRA stance - without us things would change overnight - WRONG

Take any blue state where hunting is prevalent - WI and MN first and foremost - and they would go red instantly if any type of anti-gun legislation impacted them in any way, shape or form.

This simple fact can't be ignored - it's political suicide.

"Democrats by and large are not anti-gun, it's a myth." Did you forget that the Attorney General of the United States said that they wanted to reinstated the AWB at a news conference? You know, the ban on weapons based upon cosmetic features.

ok bober, I'll play along - yes, the AWB was not the best-written piece of legislation that has ever been passed - I think the intent was solid - but the execution a bit lacking - at the end of the day though, did it really do any harm to existing gun owners, or really infringe upon your 2nd amendment rights other than you couldn't buy any gun, only 'most' guns, that are available today?

Democrats wouldn't be trying to take yer guns away if gun owners could be trusted to use them responsibly.

See how that works?

It is ignorancer like yours that keeps me donating to the NRA..... well that and their excellent magazines.
