LuciferHaze I know what you mean... My current rig has a Fujitsu 6400 RPM drive that's served me very well indeed. 😉

I would only replace it with something quiet, fast, and totally reliable.

7200rpm/100 DIAMOND MAX 40.9GB 2Mb buffer $215 <==== I have this one....w/the Acoustics utility from Maxtor I can't even hear it!
7200rpm/100 DIAMOND MAX 60.9GB 2Mb buffer on sale! $250
7200rpm/100 IBM (Desk Star) 30.7GB 2Mb buffer $205
7200rpm/100 IBM (Desk Star) 46.1GB 2Mb buffer $240

Well, I had a little surprise a couple of days ago. About six months ago I bought a Maxtor Diamond Max 20.5 7200 intending to make it the centerpiece of my new rig. Since I need a lot of storage I just picked up a WD 60G 5400, the one with the 30G platters, to use as storage (140USD at newegg).

I just put my rig together, finally, and ran some sandra on it. The Maxtor 7200 gave me 14210, but the WD was 20940! And the WD is absolutely silent. The Max is very noisy comparatively.

Yes, I know, six months is a lot of time, but.... what can I tell you?

All Maxtors for me baby!
I have a 45gb 7200rpm DiamondMax and a 80gb 5400rpm Diamondmax... both are silent, only thing I hear out of my computer is the CPU fan.

I say IBM. They seem to be marginally faster than the competition and are quiet. I know there were problems with the 75GXP's but they fixed them with the 60GXP series.
