Out of the loop - need a new PSU for older system.

Specs in signature. Recently upgraded from a 1070 to a 1080 ti FE.

Things were fine at first, but now the PC shuts off during heavy load with overclock in games that utilize 100% GPU and CPU. Underclocking CPU barely helps as it doesn't consume much power.

Underclocking GPU fixes the problem for now. (80% power limit)
Furmark by itself with overclock does not shut pc off. Only when entire system is loaded.

I am fairly confident my 6 year old Corsair PSU is past its prime. It is the RM850w. The fans spin up during heavy load which is good at least.

I checked JohnnyGuru's site but it recently went through an overhaul so it had a brief hiatus for reviews.

Would be interested in knowing what some good newer models are. I really am out of the loop.

edit: I plan on ordering PSU in the next few days for replacement over the weekend.

Seasonic Prime is top quality, and their Focus Plus line is very good too (10 yr warranty). Other than that EVGA and Corsair's gold/plat/titanium lines are good, and also come with 10yr warranty.

Definitely overkill, but I have that unit and it's a really soild, well-built PSU.

Units like the EVGA G3, Seasonic Focus PLus (Gold and Platinum), and the Corsair RMx (2018 updated version) are all really good units as well.

I recently went with a Seasonic Focus 750 to replace and its been awesome compared to the old Earthwatts 650 it replaced.
Much quieter than any PSU I've ever owned.

Thanks for the replies! I ended up with the Seasonic Prime 750w gold. I ended up going this route since I have never owned a Seasonic PSU. I have an EVGA power supply powering an i3 6100 + R9 290 and used the Corsair before so I like the idea of trying out more brands. I guess I'm trying to have as much fun as I can over a power supply.

I bought it on Amazon because I had a $25 gift card. No MIR though afaik.

It is arriving Tuesday so I hope I will have time to install it on Wednesday.

Since my Corsair power supply still works under low loads I'm wondering what I should do with it. Certainly not going to sell it, but I wonder what kind of loads it can handle in a few years.

Probably not responsible to use it in another build for low power consumption without a dGPU.

recycle it? take out the heatsinks / caps that are good / replace the bad part and use it again.. lots of things to do but doesnt really matter just dont use it for another build with out fixing it unless its a dying system anyway.

The first thing to do is pop it open and check for dust buildup and burst capacitors. There is no reason an aging PSU can't be fully functional again, most parts in it are either 100% working or fried except that capacitors degrade over use and fans can start spinning at lower RPM if the bearing is shot or needs lubed.

Granted there are more subtle faults like gradual power line surge damage but they don't tend to create a situation where it runs pretty close to the same output until you reach some 80% load of something like in your case.

Granted, it takes a beefy soldering iron with a good broad (chisel is best IMO) tip to recap the output side of a decent PSU.

Ok good news! New power supply arrived (Seasonic Prime 750w gold).

I swapped out the old Corsair and started up my old CPU overclock and GPU overclock. Been running Assassin's Creed Odyssey with the CPU at 4.2 GHz and the GPU at 2 GHz core and +200 Mhz on the memory at 4k. No shut downs at all! With the Corsair, the PC would shut off in minutes. Been going for about an hour now.

This is a happy ending! Only problem now is redoing my cable management. Was too excited to bother at first
